It's not that ir cant be done, its that its 122 times easier with a camera that has tracking phase detection and you know, usable ISO 3200. Good photos anyway
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

But see how close he is to the girls. The photographer is practically inside the action. This makes his images very vivid and life-like, but interferes with the sport event itself.

I've been on the sidelines with a team photographing soccer with a 70-300 & I didn't even come close to looking like those Leica shots....

They will have to stop the game if you enter the field. Soccer is strict in that respect - only the teams, the referee and one ball must be inside.

When you're on the sidelines with a 70-300  lens like me, you don't have to stop the game  ;)

I'll try some different techniques in a month or so when next season starts to if I can even come close to his Leica shots...

Ding!
Just realized that I need a fast (2.8) 200 & I think I can achieve the a somewhat similar effect....

85mm f1.8 might work from the sidelines too.....

Your photos will not be the same if you shoot with a telephoto lens. You have to be inside the game in order to achieve that. Your 17 may be a more appropriate lens then, and not 70-300 or 85mm. Turn off IS and switch to MF too, as AF and IS will only slow you down. Ask them not to kick the ball at you. And yes, try to organize a special practice session in which they will act as if playing for the grand finale, but will also let you in the field.
I've never done that, these are some random suggestions, you know.

I still disagree about being insidebthe game.  Look at the first and second shots again......

I still think it's possible from the team sideline where I have been before...

I strongly disagree, af tracking in phase detection was made for sports.
Panther, theres gotta be something going on there, at the very least these are crops. The longest leica m lens is like 135mm at 3.5

This summer,
I'm going to get an 85mm ƒ2.8 for my NEX....shooting from the sidelines, I think it's *possible* provided I'm skilled enough.... :D

Agree, the 1st thing I saw was that these were "Close" photo's, not telephoto photo's...
Fast ISO, F/11, 28mm or 35mm lens, use the Hyper-focus scale or a calculator to set the lens by..(MF must be put on with focus by wire lenses after you AF a set distance for proper DOF)

Now you have a p/s for 2m-20m let's say, and wait for the activity to come to you...

I think its posible, you're maybe gonna have to crop some a bit but with enough practice its doable

Lisandra,
It's an A-Mount "Easy Choice" lens $250 USD  :D
Anyways, I'm hoping I can leave the crop alone....

even better, manual focusing on these is way easier. Do post your results

v04 NEX firmware has turned the NEX into a completely new animal!
I've purchased 2 "Easy Choice" primes for the following:

50mm ƒ1.8 = $140 USD
35mm ƒ1.8 = $190 USD

The BIG issue with the NEX system however is TOTAL LACK of native E-Mount lenses....

I think the shooter did not use the Hyper-Focal scale on the lens.. to many are OOF in the wrong areas, and the exposures are a bit off, or they need a more dodging in post.  The overall framing is good, but the shooter missed the exposure and Point-of-Focus on some of them.

A friend of mine uses Leica M8 at the moment for shooting Roller Derby.  It's doable, but even he will admit that is difficult.  The odds of capturing peak action moments greatly reduces.  Main difference is that it changes your objective in determining what kind of shots you want to take.  This is true with using the E-P1 as well.  I've pretty much given up on trying to capture peak action because of the deficiencies of the camera, and now just look for interesting emotional content.

I'm glad you mentioned this.
We've got a local Roller Derby team here & I've contemplated going to one of their events to shoot...

The flicker gallery isn't mine, it's my friends who uses an M8.

You can see a couple of my shots using the E-P1 on the gallery here

http://e-p1.net/media/?sa=album;in=56

I used the adapted 4/3 40-150mm and was sitting far up in the balcony with Continuous AF.  No tracking though since it's the E-P1... sigh.  The 40-150mm lens is my go to lens for sports shooting now.  I hope to upgrade to the 50-200mm f2.8-3.5 4/3 lens eventually, but no sense in upgrading until I get a new body.

Here are some shots I took with the 14-42mm and the FL-36R with no post processing.

http://sacredcityderby.dotphoto.com/CPViewAlbum.asp?AID=6107347

I've got hundreds of other shots that are not post processed or posted on the web yet.  That reminds me though, I should spend this weekend PP photos.

Oh, one tip when shooting RD to make some cash is to take more photos of the beginner team and try to get every skater as the focus subject.  The beginner skaters are more likely to buy prints from you since it's a memory they want to save.  Small leagues have two teams, the all-stars that is ranked nationally, and a beginner team.  Larger leagues have 3 or 4 teams that compete against each other to determine the all-star team.  The all-stars are spoiled with photos, and are much less likely to buy prints unless it's a tournament or championship game.
