Another piece of the OM-D
« on: January 23, 2012, 02:18:36 AM »

Looks like we're going to have to put together this camera like a puzzle! Anything interesting in this photo? It looks like the OM-D was photoshopped in, but 43rumors claims it wasn't.

A bit of my own artistic license, below I combined our two photos collected so far.

So they did include the protruding lens mount of the original OM... I'm disappointed.

Why are you disappointed?

Looks like no shutter speed (or other parameter) control around the lens mount either, which would have been cool I think... oh well.  Still looks damn nice in my opinion.

It looks to me that the dials are probably programmable like the NEX7 since they have no labels on them.  I'm curios about the lens mount on how they plan on supporting 4/3 lenses without losing focus speed or functionality like AF-tracking.  Maybe, an updated 4/3 adapter is also in the works, at least I hope so.

It's a Sony sensor.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

It's a Sony sensor.
I hope for a lighter AA filter than most cameras with Sony sensors.....

Well, IMO a protruding lens mount kinda defeats the purpose of not having a mirror. It adds to the bulk of the camera by putting the lenses further out from the body. I had hoped it would be a slim as the E-P3 (or just marginally thicker). I'm not hugely disappointed though, just a little.

OK, next piece of puzzle

Will it have a Pentaprism, similar to the OM1 or OM4 (which are quite small compared to the humps of that day) OR an RF style EVF like the Fuji X100 ?

That was one of the first things they leaked. It has an EVF placed in the middle of the camera, where the pentaprism was on the OM-1.

It's a Sony sensor.

Interesting if its true.

Olympus definitely managed to achieve a 'look' with the Panasonic sensors, I wonder if they will be able to maintain that.

It looks like a really small protrusion, 2 or 3mm the most. Actually i believe it's more of a design accent, rather than a real protrusion.

Ok, Oly seems to be playing the old teasing game very well this time. I'm hooked already, although there have been no actual samples of what this camera is really capable of....

It looks to me like it's quite a bit more than 2-3mm. From the top plate, that is, not from the grip. It's definitely not the full 12mm of the OM-1, but maybe 5-6mm..? Not that that's a big deal, I just feel it's a step in the wrong direction, especially if it's just a design accent.

Anyway, I'll hold off complaining any further until I see the whole camera.

It doesn't look like a penta-prism above the lens mount.  It's more circular, doesn't even resemble the OM-4.

It looks more like the E-5's viewfinder hump.

I wonder if the new Sony sensor is the new OM-D sensor?  It would explain the HDR feature...

http://photorumors.com/2012/01/23/sony-develops-next-generation-back-illuminated-cmos-sensor-with-rgbw-coding-and-hdr-movie-function-canon-files-a-patent-for-a-large-bsi-sensor/

From my understanding of the Sony announcement none of the sensors with the new technology that they are delivering are anywhere near 43 format. I could be wrong but they all looked like smart-phone sensors. This isn't to say that the new Olympus doesn't use a Sony sensor, just not the ones described in the announcement. Sony making 43 format sensors would actually be pretty big news, but maybe Olympus 'shoe-horned' a Sony APSc sensor in this new body (that seems like an equally weird approach)?

Well this is interesting...

They have obviously made a preview of the camera, so it's interesting they put a photo of the OM-4 in there.

Here is Mock UP based on real image leaks so far...
It could be close IMO...even though it is a fake mock-up... the KNOWN features were incorporated.

A few years ago on the fourthirdsphoto forum, one of the members shared a rumor he heard about the long-term goal of Olympus was to produce a "digital OM4." I am not sure how much "inside knowledge" this member had or whether he was merely relaying wishful thinking.

Nevertheless, I have been waiting impatiently for Oly to release a pro level digital body with multi-spot metering (MSM) capability. I employed it for every shot that didn't include flash photography, and that was only because Oly didn't have pre-flash (multi-) spot metering capability back then. It should be easy enough to include today.

With MSM in the OM3/4(T), we had the most practical application of Ansel Adams' zone system in the field. In today's digital photo world, with the ability to easily optimize post processing for each frame, MSM seems more relevant than ever for zone system practitioners.
Regards,

J A P

I don't think the viewfinder hump is that angular, I think it's more reminiscent of the E-5.
