Who's planning on getting the E-PM1?
« on: July 17, 2011, 12:02:01 AM »
Considering as the cheapest new camera, and has a feature set comparable to the original Olympus E-P1, is it tempting? Or is the loss of controls frustrating and leading you to not want to buy it and instead possibly buy the E-PL3 or E-P3?

Using the E-P1 like a DSLR, the controls it had were frustrating so I found myself using auto more and more often over time. Which is what I'd guess most M buyers would end up doing too... again because I already have the P1, the difference just isn't there to make me say "buy it now!"
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!

I am very interested in the E-PM1, will make the 'buy' decision when I get a chance to handle it.
Pictures always should have a special story behind it or a special meaning to the photographer.

I'm actually looking forward to the E-P3 touch screen.  I've been using my Android phone's camera lately just to get used to the touch screen shooting technique.  It's really liberating.  You just frame your scene then click on the screen where you want focus.  No need to focus lock then move the camera to get the scene framed nicely.

I'm afraid to see how that function works in really low light though.

It seems that also the E-PM1 has the touch-screen!
I think it would be great for MF if you could magnify by tapping on the screen.

I didn't think it did, but since I have yet to find a single review of the camera I can't tell for sure.

It doesn't.  The big selling point of the E-P3 is the fancy OLED touch screen.  E-PM1 is targeted it at p&s users looking for something beyond what their smart phone can do (besides make phone calls).  It has simplified menus similar to a p&s.  Concepts like ISO, shutter speed, and aperture are abstracted out into non photo geek speak.

I can live without touch screens but features like the AF-assist, fast AF, high resolution of the LCD are all plus points for me.

The curious thing about all the new Pens is that they have essentially the same feature set. The camera that looks the deal is the new E-PL3 for its fold out LCD. Great for macros and tripod work.

That said, the more physical direct controls are handy...
Be nice to each other, life is too short for anything else.

I might consider an E-PM1 as a second body if it's affordably priced and if it's available as body only (and that's a big if, considering how difficult it was to get body-only versions of the earlier PENs).
