Which camera are you most excited about?
« on: June 29, 2011, 10:59:35 PM »
I must say that the E-P3 has exceeded every expectation, and I seriously want it. But the other two strike me as quite intriguing as well, and I could see the PEN Mini as a camera that would go everywhere with me.

Is there a difference between the E-P3 and E-PL3 sensor?  The E-PL3 will do 5fps, but E-P3 only does 3fps.  Spec wise the E-PL3 seems the better camera unless I'm missing something.  The only difference in the olympus web page is "fine detail processing" on the E-P3.  Not sure what that is supposed to mean.

The features seem to be a bit mixed up, the highest end model being the only one with the flash, etc. They all have the same sensor though as far as I'm aware.

The mini-flash included with the E-PL3 is sweet.  The E-PL3 doesn't have the touch screen OLED like the E-P3.  The reviewers are saying glare is not an issue with the new OLED.  I'm curious as to what this is supposed to mean?

"Auto focus:  When non High-speed imager AF compatible lens is used, works as AF assist"

If it gives an AF confirmation light when using adapted lenses, that would kick so much ass.

AF assist should work with any lens.

I might just opt for the 12mm F0.95 voigtlander instead of 12mm Oly lens if it does give me focus confirmation.  Pick up the kit with the 17mm lens included.  Maybe get the 7mm-14mm and 100-300mm panny lenses in the long term to complete the set.  I've got plenty of fast primes, so the 45mm f1.8 is a bit useless for me assuming AF confirmation does work.

The E-P3 and E-PM1 (Mini) caught my attention. The E-PL3 (Lite) doesn't appeal to me due to the articulating screen (more to break). Geez, slap the 17mm lens on the E-PM1 and you've got a tiny powerhouse.

Aside from cameras, the new FL-300R flash looks awesome, too. Wireless mode master/slave support and two AAA batteries with a GN of 20. Where was this months ago when I was looking for a small flash?! LOL

Well, I am excited to see some good stuff from Olympus! Thank you Oly!

As I understand it, the E-PL3 and E-PLM has a new shutter. That's why it is faster.

Yes, that is correct.  Getolympus facebook Q and A session verified a new shutter on the E-PL3 and E-PM1.  They didn't answer why the E-P3 does not have the new shutter technology.

Probably because they wanted to reuse the chassis from the E-P1/2 (cost).

I agree that the E-PM1 could well be the most attractive of these alternatives, and certainly more so than the E-PL3. I might buy it depending on price, but I would have to get my hands on it to see if I would be comfortable with something so small. Does this new flash unit work on the PM1?

These are all great cameras, and if I had the $ I'd go for the e-pl3.  I love the tilt screen (never thought I would, have been happy with my e-p1).  BUT... I'm saving my pennies for the pro model.  This is going to be a long wait while everyone here has all the fun!  :)

The PRO, better be worth wait... Or Oly will suffer the delay...
The Panny Pro will already be out, and may be on a 2nd update by then...
Just saying..

The E-P3, is great addition with a decent set of updates to move into from earlier models.

Exactly right M5... myself, I must wait as it will be perfectly timed with what I can afford.  These models just out are excellent, but I'll keep pushing my e-p1 in the hopes that the pro will be worth the LONG wait.
