The AF illuminator is a great feature. I missed it very badly on my E-P1.

I liked the Sony IR pattern AF help over a bright red/orange light.

But, as said, having any AF help, is better than none.

Impressive indeed. But it appears to have been done using the fast 12mm f/2.0 lens. I imagine it will be somewhat less impressive with the kit zoom at f/5.6.

I need this. Accurate AF on dim light, I don't even care if its fast, all I need is for it to lock on on the first try.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

I still don't get it why Olympus performed (and still performs) this salami slicing. In very short intervals "new" bodies are presented, slightly enhanced, but mainly with only one (or very few) major feature. Starting with the E-P1, one would soon miss the EVF option - that is was easily possible was shown with the E-P2. Now AF speed (+ illuminator) and integrated flash.

As mentioned somewhere else, the E-P3 is somehow what the E-P1 should have been like right from the beginning. Was it really that hard to come up with all these features? Why spread them over different model lines, and only after two years combine them?

Why not NOW the integrated EVF? Still, the semi-pro (well..) user has to decide - either EVF, or (real) flash. And it's a pain to shoot with the E-P2 with Di466 attached, and NOT having an EVF. No stability at all.

Really, I don't get it. I am actually annoyed by this Olympus tactics. Keeps me from buying the E-P3.

This is an effective marketing strategy. Unless pressured by competition there is no point in giving the customer everything at once. The goal obviously is to make you buy all these new models, one after the other. Olympus has decided that they can get away with this strategy.

I'm afraid every brand has to do this to compete with Canon (mostly) and Sony (now to a larger extent). Otherwise they lose sales on new cameras when the competition releases a camera with the same abilities and more.

The "teaspoon per hour" policy is frustrating... understandable - may be, but also frustrating.

Yes, there's little incentive for a manufacturer to "blow their wad" in one shot. But it is annoying when they go too conservative and give you only minimal goodies in a new version. Then they run the risk of being steam-rolled by a competitor that has truly something special.

It is a bit odd that they left the flash off the E-PL3, but not a big loss considering you get the tilt screen.  When using the included mini flash as a fill, just tilt the screen to block out the sun.  At night, I don't see any reason to use an EVF considering you get the manual focus magnification through the LCD screen.  Olympus probably reduced their cost of manufacturing significantly leaving the flash off the body.

You can see a bit of thrashing in determining the best balance between features and manufacturing cost.  The E-PL1 was a boxy, plastic, but good camera that sold ok.  the E-PL2 was a kickass design, yet plastic, that sold great in asia.  So, they kept the E-PL2 design and made it a metal body with sweet OLED screen etc... as their flagship model.  Then redesigned the E-PL series as a much more simplistic slick modern design to compete against NEX in features and cost.  The idea there is to make it as compact as possible to fit in your pocket.

It looks to me that the E-PM1 is the main design focus for the future low end where pocket cameras are replaced by smart phones.  What is confusing to me is why they chose to stick with the E-PL series and give it a tilt screen, yet leave the tilt screen off of the flagship E-P3.  I don't think the E-PL3 is lighter than the E-P3 as the name implies.  If anything, I can see the E-PL disappearing from the portfolio in the next couple years when E-P4 (with tilt screen) and E-PM2 are released.  Who's to say we won't get an EVF with flash in the future either.

I bet olympus is just testing the waters to see what the demand is for an EVF with flash.  Will someone who bought the E-PM1 want an EVF, let alone want one with a flash?  And will someone who bought the E-P3 want a tilt screen?  Those are the questions olympus is asking now.  I don't think we will ever see a "pro" Pen model with built in EVF.  We might get a "pro" m43 model from olympus that looks like an E-5 instead as they phase out "legacy" 4/3.

Note: I put "legacy" in quotes because that is how the product manager from olympus refers to 4/3 lenses in the get olympus facebook.

I just read the AF led on the EP 3 has 1.5 times more the luminosity (power) compared to the G/GH models. awesome
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...
