Travelling with the E-P2 + VF-2...
« on: June 27, 2011, 10:40:37 PM »
... sucks :-(

First, I have to say that I really like my E-P1 and 2. Image quality in a technical sense is almost perfect for me, as there is nearly no need to do any post processing.

For a recent two-weeks trip through Turkey with all its wonderful places like Istanbul, Bursa, Troj or Ephesos, I had decided to take the "small set" instead of the full-frame image monster. I took the E-P2 with VF-2, the 17mm pancake, and the 14-150mm. Everything fitted neatly into my Urban Disguise - except that I had to detach the VF-2 everytime I put the camera into the bag. Whenever I tried to put the E-P2 into the bag with the VF-2 attached, the latter got stuck somewhere and came loose or fell completely off. The bag is big enough to hold my 5DMKII, so this was no problem of bag space.

So taking the camera with EVF from the bag to shoot and put it back afterwards was a pain. It really didn't work nicely. In that sense, I am really disappointed.

During the return flight, two guys next to me did some photo talk, both playing around with their brand new GH2s. They opened a small and handy camera back, took out the GH2, and after showing-off they simply put it back. It went in neatly as it had come out before. Then I had a look at my huge Urban Disguise and thought of the trouble I had, taking out and putting back my E-P2.

I am very close to say good-bye to Olympus. The E-P3 should really come with an integrated electronic viewfinder.

A little frustrated
Z.

I wish I had the phone or email of someone in Oly marketing.....I would explain in detail what I don't completely like in their cameras.
The lack of in-built EVF is indeed my last prejudice before announcing the E-P3 as the ultimate PEN....instead of that we have a flash....hello?!?

If you like the forum, or if you received a helpful tip here, why not donate a dollar or two to help us pay for its hosting?

Hey, maybe it's not a pop-up flash but a pop-up EVF. Now that would be great.

Seriously, I can see what you mean about the clumsiness of the attachment - it just looks like an afterthought with little attention paid to the design or practicality.

That space could have been a EVF instead.  Dumb... that would have made it the smallest m4/3 with a built in EVF too. a great marketing point IMO was lost.

I agree completely. A built-in EVF takes up far less space than attaching one, and is far less of a PITA as the OP points out. A built-in flash is useless for anything but snapshots... and even manages to destroy those. The first is an aid to photography, the second a toy.

As soon as Olympus releases a pro model with two dials, ISO on a direct control, a built-in EVF and a tilt screen they will have the feature advantage over all competition (great for the adverts) plus will have made the best MFT body for photographers.

I'm sure Panasonic will come out with something to keep you with Micro Four Thirds...

I have an E-PL2 & the VF-2 so while I may not entirely agree with your frustration, I do UNDERSTAND you....

I agree, even with the VF attached the PEN cant really be bigger than a G/GH. how bout this? It should fit the PEN and VF nicely
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

... what I have to add is this: The Pen allows for LOTS of keepers, compared to other cameras I use(d) over the years. Furthermore, I feel almost no need for any post-processing. I am happy with the OOC-Jpgs, and only in very rare cases I might consider tweaking a picture a little bit. I think I won't do it at all, actually.

For those interested, a couple of pictures taken in Turkey recently can be found here (keep in mind, these are snapshots, no art intended):

The PEN is not only a camera , it is a way of life. (=retro)
The looks are more important than conveniency.

Good point! Then, how about designing an EVF that isn't so darn bulky? It looks like hell on the camera.

Ummm, that depends on how small a the EVF LCD is mainly, I am not sure, But, I'd guess it more than a mirror box. So it has a LCD that gets the image signal from the plug in connections..

A smaller EFV could be used... but, the resolution will be lower also.
