Thoughts by non-photographers
« on: January 20, 2010, 09:03:44 AM »
Hello!

I recently sold my DSLR (Canon 450D with a few lenses) and bought the E-P1 + Lumix 20mm + FL-36R + VF-1, and I find it both ridiculous and lame that people that know (almost) nothing about cameras have random opinions and thoughts about the E-P1.

For an example, most of my friends went "You sold your DSLR for THAT??" when they first saw it, and many still think I'm weird switching to this camera.

I've also seen alot of random things said about the camera on forums.
This was on a swedish forum:
"The E-P1 is kind of in between, it's alot better than the best compactcamera out there, but it's still far worse than the worst SLR when you take imagequality and noise into consideration."

Uhh.. Guess people don't understand what m4/3-systems are capable of!

So, have you got any similar experiences?

/phattE, Helsinki Finland - ( ps. I totally love the E-P1 :) )

The reaction I get form most people is "Oh what a beautiful classic camera! How old is it?" Then I have to explain that it is a brand new DIGITAL camera (it's an E-P1).

Mmmm, I know what you mean, I work at Jessops, and although people here are very knowledgeable about what it's capable of, that's mostly thanks to me hammering it into them every opportunity I got!

TBH though, I'm not sure I care what people think too much, to a select few I get looks of envy, to the rest, I'm quite happy that it's not too ostentatious!

I like the fact that it looks a bit like a compact ... rather than a big full-frame dSLR that shouts it price tag and steal me!

Yeah, that's also one of the reasons I wanted this camera. It doesn't draw any attention to it except from those who know what it is :P

It is really irritating, people who had point and shoots thought that because my E-P1 looked like their cameras, that they were the same.

You can get into concerts and sporting events as a non-press photographer because security is too stupid to recognize quality when they see it.  At least where I live that is an issue.  Most events have signs 'No Professional Grade Cameras'.

This is precisely why, over the past few years, I enjoyed shooting film using old cheaply-obtained Olympus ZLRs such as the iS-100 (now broken); iS-2000; iS-3000; iS-500. Olympus iS-series - switched off Particularly the latter one - it looks so much like a tourist camera, I found I could just go right up to people and pretty much shoot them directly in the face and nobody minded at all. Nobody considered it anything more than an amateur camera, and yet they had superb optics - very much competitive with some of the good lenses you’d have bought for a conventional SLR. And I was picking them up on eBay for peanuts. Very good. In fact, the construction of the E-P1’s 14-42mm zoom reminds me a lot of the iS-500 zoom.

Well at least the investigation might get us some more activity here.

I'm no pro, i barely consider myself an amateur.  But all the feedback i've gotten has been really positive.  People love my EP2 and are always asking me about it.  In fact my own dear ol' dad, who is a LONG time Nikon guy, is so impressed by it that he is considering the jump to m4/3.  Booya

r604, that a story ive seen and heard a bit myself....... 3 friends have gone over to the pen because   spending a few minute with one....... and then playing with  superfast legacy lenses .....seeing the jpegs quality , and the sweet compact, metallic  density of the m4\3 pen.............. they get hooked

hope the ep1 becomes a family affair for you and your dad

I frequently scan my local craigslist for photo opportunities, and it is amusing how many people post ads looking for photographers, but only those who possess "good equipment" and "professional cameras."  Some even ask that when replying to the ads, you include the make and model of your camera.  They just don't realize that it's the photographer that makes the picture.
