The E-PL1's flaw?
« on: February 02, 2010, 11:17:03 PM »
Has anyone noticed that there are no dials whatsoever on the E-PL1?

It doesn't need any. This camera is so advanced that it reads your mind...

Well, it does make me not want to get the camera as much as I did.

The controls are like a point and shoot camera. I assume that is the market it is pitched at so sort of makes sense.

Yes, that's pretty much kills it for me, as I only use Aperture priority mode ever. :(

It does have PASM modes so I'd assume you'll use some button presses instead of the wheel. Not a big deal.
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!

You use the up button to enter exposure mode and then the right and left button to change exposure compensation. If you're in A-mode, the up and down button now changes aperture. When you're finished adjusting, you press the OK button.
This seems like a fairly simple system, although dedicated wheels are of course much quicker.

The arrangement seems fairly standard. Use the big dial on the top between the shutter button and the hot shoe to change modes and the arrow buttons to change aperture and shutter speed. Common to most point and shoot cameras with advanced controls.

I can think of several people that this would be perfect for (hi mom!) that coveted my E-P1 but don't really want to mess with anything but auto. In fact, I would not recommend an E-P1 to them, but this fully automatic smaller/cheaper camera might be just the ticket.

Other flaws: 1/2000 max shutter speed, 3200 max ISO level, no orientation sensor for IS and max 3EV IS.

Unfortunately a few other things have been noted as well.

Max shutter speed: 1/2000 sec
ISO 3200

Disappointing to say the least.

DPReview's comparative tables are very informative.

Now: how come a smaller camera like the E-PL1 is heavier than the GF1? 13 grams heavier!

Without the EVF.

Beats me...

It has a mono microphone built in instead of stereo.  Are they really saving that much in cost by switching the mic?  It reminds of the two guys and a bear analogy.  You don't have to run faster than the bear, just run faster than the other guy (GF-1 in this case).
