Struggling to get a handle of the settings for the EP1
« on: April 26, 2011, 07:03:48 PM »
Hey guys

I have had my EP1 for over 3 months now and im loving it..

my previous camera was a Sony Alpha a230 with the stock lens and also a tamron 18-200 lens. i loved my sony. using Manual setting always to take any shot.. I got a hang of the settings and the results  pretty easy.

Having used my ep1. and also used it on my sisters wedding. took some nice shots but wasnt truely happy with the results..
my ep1 has the stock 14-44mm lens.

my issues with the camera..
i used it it manual and auto setting.

and i wasnt getting as sharp photos compared to the sony. i know its a different setting but im having a hard time with adjusting the apeture, shutter etc etc compared to using my sony dslr..

i know its a hard to explain as they are just different cameras
maybe i miss the view finder feature of a DSLR.. makes me struggle getting a balance when holding the camera and getting settings correct

one thing i love with the EP1 is it shows the results of the shot when u adjust the apeture, shutter, iso and EV exposure.. it shows it before you take the shot..

but has any one had a similar issue transferring from a Proper sized DSLR and the Pens,.

No doubt this camera is excellent i am loving my EP1. maybe i need more time to practise with it.
I tried some macro shots with the stock lens of the ep1. 14-44mm lens. and it took so very very nice shots..
maybe im just not 100% confident yet with the settings.

i bought a Nissin Di466 Flash which i will receive within 2 weeks.
am i crazy is has any one else had a hard time adjusting from using a DSLR to a PEN..

Yeah, I am switching between a DSLR, a couple of SLRs, a couple of rangefinders, etc, all the time. I struggle not to poke my eye on the hot shoe of my E-P1, where the VF should be.

Indeed it is great. Just don't push it in low light etc, as it won't perform well.

I never used M mode on an event etc. Just this camera is not good for that. Use A mode (Not iAuto) instead, dial in the desired aperture, set ISO and WB according to the conditions and shoot!
Set the widest aperture and a bit higher ISO for indoors, stop down a bit outside, etc. Let the camera calculate the shutter speed for you, it's very good at that.
It just ain't too good for adjusting both exposure parameters with one hand. The lack of a proper hand grip makes it hard to.

I on the other hand, have trouble going from m4/3 to sony!. On the A55 in manual mode its the dial for shutter speed and aperture is pressing the exp. comp. button and turning the dial WHILE leaving the button pressed. GH1/2  just pressing on the dial switches between the two. I barely have to move and it much faster.
I guess it comes down to practice
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Lol. Yeah i bought the stock view finder for my ep1 but i find it so useless. i dont know why i bothered buying it.  as it doesnt comply with the 14-44mm lens.

yeah i noticed that. the ep1 is not good at all with low light thats why i bought the flash. i struggled the whole way in my sisters wedding when it came to lo light... luckily she hired a pro photographer. he has 2 Nikon d700. but i reackon he did a bad job. he didnt exploit the whole floor when taking shots...

this was my next question
what is the best mode to use for the ep1 for everyday use and events

apeture mode (A) .. i tried using that and man im shocking with that mode. every time i use that settings to try. i always get dark images even when i go above 600 in iso. am i doing something wrong?

i will try it tonight what you said..
you are right when it comes to adjusting the 2 dials with 1 hand. very hard to do.

i will try what you said and see how i go.. thanks for your advise

There is a bug report thread. That's an issue only our administrator Voyager can fix, so please post it there:

I can't really say....it works fine for me. It is the mode my camera works with in 97% of the shots. Check if you have some exposure compensation dialed.
