Some questions about E-PL2 (and vs GF1)
« on: June 14, 2011, 04:24:25 AM »
Hi guys,

I'm planning on purchasing a micro four thirds camera and would appreciate if you could help me out with some questions I have.

I am coming into this from a Canon 400D background, but am attracted to the size of the Olympus and Panasonic offerings.

So, at the moment I'm swaying towards the E-PL2 due to its ISO performance and default JPEGs (I will be doing post in Photoshop CS5, but I'm not the sort of person who performs post on every picture I take so this is nice in that it'll save me time).

Here are my questions:

1. Will the E-PL2 autofocus with the Panasonic 20mm 1.7 and the new Leica Summilux 25mm F1.4 lenses? And do Panasonic lenses like these actually perform better/faster on Panasonic bodies?

2. Is there a live view histogram mode for the E-PL2? If so, is it movable like the GF1? Live histogram is rather important to me.

3. I see there's no AF assist on the E-PL2. How much of an issue is this, if any? (I suspect not much with a fast lens, but I'm open to advice.)

4. Any case for choosing the GF1 over the E-PL2?

Many thanks for any advice provided.

Ta,
J

I cannot really answer your questions but will jut add my two cents since I see no-one else yet has. I won only the E-P1 but have great experience with the Pentax DSLR system and film cameras.

I find responsiveness and auto-focus to be somewhat between a good point and shoot and an SLR. I expected nothing different and am happy. I honestly don't think that it makes sense to choose a camera model based on micro-fractions of a second difference in performance in this area. Because all of these tiny differences are negligible when it comes to the much larger differences between different camera systems. And in any case uncontrollable real-world factors when out taking a pictures render minute differences a moot point.

All the Olympus models have small live histogram viewable as you frame a shot, and a larger one on review. You can choose which screens you toggle between in each case, so you could set up the LCD to show only an undisturbed image or the image + histogram and quickly move between them when composing.

In any case, I was extremely surprised at how accurately the E-P1 meters. Stunning.

I can confirm that resulting JPGs are excellent. I shot with RAW + JPG and in no case could tell the difference on my monitor. Of course RAW will allow more latitude in post-processing. Since these files are not that much bigger than the largest JPG files, I stick with RAW.

I think there are significant reasons to choose Olympus over Panasonic. One is the aesthetics of the PEN -- obviously a personal choice but undeniable. The Olympus LCD is better in bright light though still a pain to use.

But the number one difference is the IBIS which instantly makes all lenses much more usable on my E-P1. I would not do without.

Hi and welcome to the forum!

Yes!

I believe distortion and lateral CA are corrected for Pany lenses on Pany bodies. Not sure how relevant and current this info is, but there was such a statement spoken more than once here.

Not sure how E-PL2 works, but E-P1 has a special mode in which LV and histogram is displayed. It is not as optimal as it could be, as you have to go though different LV modes in order to reach it.

I didn't know that. Maybe someone who actually has it could confirm.

I've owned the Canon Digital Rebel XTi myself. You'll love the E-PL2.

As far as I know it, no pen has AF assist. Panny lenses will perform slightly better on panny bodies (the leica more noticeably) in terms of AF but so much enough to go running to panny because of it. Both the 20 and the upcoming leica are optical wonders and are minimally corrected if any (the leica will not be corrected). I infinitely prefer the menu and features of panny over oly but unless you get a g3, the epl2 will have a much much better jpeg.
Sooooo its AF assist, faster AF (especially with the leica) and a good menu/features vs in body is, the best jpeg (unless you get a g3), cool filters (actually useful) and the spec sheet says a live histgram can be overlaid during shooting.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

Not sure exactly what you mean, but E-P1 has a feature in MF or AF+MF, in which the center of the screen is automatically magnified when you rotate the focusing ring of a compatible lens.
Or you mean AF assist light?

I'm pretty sure he means the AF assist light, which would be correct, as none of them have it.

Thanks for your input guys.

I have a final question for you:

Will EXIF data be available when using the Panasonic 20mm 1.4 or the Leica Summilux 25mm F1.4 on an E-PL2 body?

Thanks,
J

on a side note, it was just announced that the upcoming pens will focus faster than anything ever made!
