Panasonic m4/3 lenses on Olympus m4/3 bodies?
« on: October 28, 2010, 08:55:18 AM »
I'm thinking about buying that new Panasonic 14mm f2.5 lens for my E-PL1, and I just wanted to get some opinions on how well these non-native Olympus lenses focus on Olympus cameras. I'm not too concerned with extremely fast focus speed, since the E-PL1 kind of struggles in this department, but I do want it to focus at least as fast as the kit lens does with the firmware update.

I know a few people use the 20mm lens - how does that perform?

Any advice, as always, is greatly appreciated!

While I haven't measured it, I'd say the kit 14-42 and Panasonic 20mm f/1.7 are near enough the same AF speed on the E-P1, all with latest firmware updates.
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!

I regularly use both the Oly kit lens, as well as the Panny 20mm, on both of my m43 cameras, E.P1 & GF1.  I don´t do much low-light shooting though.  Mostly I care for fast lenses, not because they are ´fast´, - more so because they give me room to play with DOF, as I shoot a lot of potraits.  If the Panny 14/2.5 (I wish it was rather 12/2.5!) is ´half as good´ as the 20mm, - and we have reason to believe so, I think, we should be happy.  I´m very content with my m43 gear, so far, however, now, a year and a half after intro, I hope both Olympus and Panasonic will speed up their lens development somewhat, and asap come up with, first of all, fast ´normal´-angeled lenses (25mm/f1.4), as well as a top-of-the-class portrait zoom (40-70/2-2.5!), both IS & with fast working USM.  Good Luck wih your Panny 14mm!  And consider yourself lucky to live someplace where the gear you want, - lenses or whatever, can be found almost as soon as they are in the market, and more reasonably priced than any other place, wherever.  (Not the case here in Thailand, - and a hell of a lot of trouble with customs if one order from abroad).

I know because I'm really throwing around the possibility of getting a used Leica M8 and just having that camera the rest of my life because it seems like Olympus and Panny aren't getting their act together. Of course I'll be spending a heck of a lot on lenses, but I'd be happy with one or two excellent lenses, instead of buying another 14mm lens just to get a bit more brightness.

I was wondering something similar. Since the 14-42mm kit lens for Panasonic has OIS in the camera controls, does that mean you can't use it on the Olympus cameras even if you turn the IS off?

I use both the Panasonic 14mm and the 20mm on my E-P2 ... and ... they are excellent!

They just don't have the same kind of automatic correction through software that they would on their own cameras.

I use the 14mm Pany on my E-PM1, it works a treat, and transforms mini-pen into a 'carry anywhere' coat pocket fitting camera.  I don't use the Oly 14-42 kit lens much, and can vouch that I prefer this little prime, and will likely buy the 20mm soon too.
