Packing it
« on: July 26, 2011, 08:16:54 AM »
I have a real bone-head question.  How do you have the PEN camera set up for portability?  Upon arrival of mine (E-P1), I attached the neck strap, and I purchased the leatherette case with the magnetic clasp.  The strap does not fold conveniently into the case, the magnetic clasp does not inspire confidence, and the case deforms easily.  I think I may remove the neck strap and attach the wrist strap, like a point-and-shoot.  What do other people do, I wonder?

Personally I just wrap the strap around the case, but I am thinking of adding a handstrap, think it might work better.

I use the following two items on my E-P1 with 17mm lens attached. The pouch is great and allows for a neck strap to be attached and not get in the way of closing the pouch. Additionally, it is constructed of a neoprene material so is very padded and protective without the weight & bulk. The Domke strap has a nice rubber grip material on one side to keep the strap from sliding around.

*You could get the Oly 17mm or Panasonic 20mm pancake lens to fit, but not the larger kit lenses.*

Since I've replaced the neck strap on my E-PL1 with a leather wrist strap from Gordy's camera straps I enjoy it even more. Highly recommended!

Here's a picture of the E-PL1 with viewfinder, Fujicon 55mm lens and wrist strap (in B&W only, but the strap looks quite stylish with black leather and blue stitching):

I have been considering one for my G3.  But the kind with a string connector for the flat strap lugs.

There are nice.

I use a wrist strap, but would like the use a finger sling like those sold for Leicas.

It looks like the sling will work with the E-P3 if the thread on the screw is the same.

Quite a few people use wrist straps on their PEN, and I've considered it especially after how many times my neck strap has come loose while the camera was around my neck (thankfully I've never dropped it).

I tried a couple of options, the original Olympus neck strap, Gordy's wrist strap, a leather camera case (well, not real leather: http://cgi.ebay.de/Leather-Camera-Case-for-Olympus-PEN-E-PL1-E-PL2-Brown-/270746951622) with both options attached (neck strape / wrist strap), even both straps attached at the same time, but nothing really worked out. I also bought the original Olympus "PEN Case Modern Small", but it is REALLY small. With any of the straps attached, it is always tricky to get everything packed without the strap lolling.

What I noticed in particular with Gordy's strap: The little metal ring scratches the camera surface. I removed it and tried to attach it directly to the Pen's original triangular clip (didn't work out), and I also tried to remove the triangular clip and only use the metal ring to attach the wrist strap to the Pen. Both was not really working.

Now I'm somehow stuck. Last weekend when I took the Pen for a walk, I put the body with attached 14-150mm and viewfinder into my urban disguise 30 without any strap attached. I used the same "configuration" during my trip to Turkey. However, it is not really a pleasure, as I either had to hold the camera in my right or left hand when not shooting, or I had to put it back to the bag. With the VF-2 attached, putting the camera to the bag and taking it out again (without to loosen/losing the VF-2) is however at least tricky.

To summarize, I didn't find the perfect solution yet. With 17mm/20mm lense attached, a small camera case plus wrist strap might be fine (well, the scratching problem is a no-go for me), but with a larger lense like 14-150mm one might prefer the neck strap, or no strap at all and a bag instead (which should be big enough, however).

Regards,
Z.

EDIT: Just found out about the strap bumpers (http://www.gordyscamerastraps.com/strap-bumpers/index.htm). Any experiences with that? Which one would be best for the Pen?

Anybody who tried this already? Might be a very nice option, and might even fit into a small bag like the original Olympus Pen cases.

I just use the original neck strap. Mine has never come loose. If yours does, you might have threaded it incorrectly.
If I need to stow the camera somewhere where it might be scratched, I put it in the padded case that came with the DZ 50-200.

@zelebrator:  This should solve your 'scratching' problem (O-ring in contact with camera body), I believe:

Thanks - I had already ordered it ;-) Seems as if I didn't see that when I ordered my strap from Gordy some months ago. Well, now it will fix the little scratch problem.
