Olympus Epl-1 Screen Issues
« on: December 27, 2010, 08:56:47 PM »
I hope this is the right section to post this in, i am new to the forums and just purchased an olympus epl1 and it seems to have either screen issues or lens issues. Ill post some pictures to show you what i mean. I dont know if this is a common issue but it seems to take pictures fine but while looking at the screen or digital viewfinder there is a bluish whitish interference. The only reason i think that it might be the lens is if i turn the camera on without the lens the screen is fine, with the lens the screen is choppy. Worst comes to worst ill have to send the whole package back but any help or input would be appreciated. Thanks for listening, Jeff

You posted this in the perfect place!

That is because you have your camera in a dark area, and your screen is attempting to make itself as light as possible to see what is in front of the lens. This should only be happening in dark situations, if it's not then you have a problem. But simply put, it's just noise from your screen getting brighter, just like a high ISO photo would have visible noise on it.

Hope this helps!

Just the same:
That's probably because the camera is amplifying the signal from the sensor like crazy in order to allow a comfortable brightness level for framing and focusing. See if it does the same in bright light (I see the room that you are testing it in is quite dark).

i took more pictures in better light still the same thing, and the only reason its in iauto blur mode in every pic is bc when i do that it gets the worst. im thinking it has to be the lens tho and with no other lens yet i cant be sure but i just purchased the vf2 and it does the same in that screen as well. i have a 40-150 coming in the mail pretty soon and then i can check but until then i think ill call olympus and explain my issue

same spot with lens off

and again with lens on

On your mode dial, put your camera on the "A" mode, and set your aperture to f/3.5 at 14mm. See is this problem reoccurs.

There is no such a problem without the lens because much more light reaches the sensor. Follow Voyager's advice and see if the problem reoccurs.
Try the same in daylight.

It's not an issue, it's a feature. In really dark conditions the screen of the Olympus camera behaves this way. Even it may look scary, the images that come out of the camera are nice and well exposed even with screen like this.

That looks like indoor lighting still, which isn't really much light at all. In indoor conditions I get that noise even with the 20mm f/1.7. It's normal.
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!
