OLY Viewer II distortion correction
« on: June 21, 2011, 03:43:48 AM »
I don't manage to understand how the distortion correction works in Olympus Viewer II.
I take a RAW (name it file.RAW) image with my EP1, and I develop a JPG in-camera (file_ooc.JPG).
Then I develop the same RAW file in Viewer II, once without selecting the flag of the distortion correction option (file_no_dist_corr.JPG), and once with the flag selected (file_dist_corr.JPG).
With respect to the distortion, what I get is:

file.RAW=file_ooc.JPG=file_no_dist_corr.JPG

(I was expecting to see that file.RAW=file_no_dist_corr.JPG and file_ooc.JPG=file_dist_corr.JPG).
In the end... is the file_dist_corr.JPG the only corrected file, or is it the only uncorrected one?

Thanks!

Antonio
PS
I'm using the MAC OS version of the software.

But do you see any distortion in any of these files?
It is easy to recognize when you photograph something with parallel lines near the edges of the frame - a door, a window, etc.

Sorry for not being able to respond directly to your question, but I don't have OV at all...

... it's seems silly to myself too... but I took a picture of a grid with the Panasonic 20mm and I don't manage to understand which one is straight!
Maybe the 20 has too little distortion?

The 20 has a little distortion.. most all of the lenses do as far as that goes.
That is the new way to build lenses, Let the software correct for distortion, instead of correcting it in production.
But, I don't use the supplied software, I just make a preset with the distortion correction tool in my software for each lens, and for a Zoom, I have a few popular FL I use.

The OV may have some distortion also, that may not be lens related.
I don't need an OV with the Panny G1, but the EVF has a little also in the G1.
