oly e-pl2 ,or canon g12/oly xz
« on: April 24, 2011, 02:36:30 PM »
I really like the oly e-pl/2 for lots of reasons, but I started this quest for a new camera with the canon g12. The only advantage is that I can put it in my pocket, and that is a big advantage for me.The sensor size and limited tele zoom (only 140mm for the  g12 vs 300mm for the oly)is a big negative for me. But how noticeable is the difference in quality between the g12 sensor at 1/1.7 vs 4/3 sensor? would it be noticeable in a 16x20 print? 20 x 30? or can you even make a 20x30 that looks good with either?Anyone have both?
Thank you for your thoughts.

It's going to be much harder to print at 16x20 with the G12 than a Micro Four Thirds sensor (which I actually just got some lovely prints made at 16x20 with my E-P1).

I once had a camera with 1/1.5 Sensor, I'd say 8x10 is max. a m43. The m4/3 or 4/3 sensor is 2.25x larger than a 1/1.7 sensor... which is a huge difference concerning large printing capabilities.

If what youre really thinking about is printing, and that large, the PEN is the obvious choice. 7 or maybe 8 out of ten prints are not gonna be what you want with the other two choices. A 20x30 print is simply out of the question with a G12.

Small sensor is only good when you have lots of light

Even at ISO 50 a 20x30 print of a sensor that small will have quite a few artifacts

Indeed. Smaller sensors give a rise to higher requirements for lens sharpness and RMS spot size. The lenses rarely justify these, so ultimately it limits the maximum print you can get from your photo, not depending on the number of pixels it has.
The other severe limitation is the narrowest aperture - most compact cameras, that have aperture stops (because some just don't) is F/7.1 or F/8. It is because the diffraction spot size will become significantly larger than the pixel size.

I wouldnt use compact size for anything bigger than a standard print (here already 50$ cams are doing ok). But if you reach something like ISO400 its getting really noisy. I also never understood why they are not increasing sensor sizes instead of creating useless mp values. Four thirds is for sure a gift from heaven here.

i agree with the consensus above a pen or panny micro 43 sensor camera ep1 gf1 etc will give awesome results compared with the tiny sensored compacts ,

i love the compacts and at low isos they shine ,but for the real quality go with the bigger sensor

Thank you for your advice.
I got the e-pl2.
It feels very good.
I am just learning to use it. Lots of fun.
I do not think that I will ever replace my full size Canon SLR. But I can use my L-lenses .Excellent.
I also have some OM lenses that I like, especially the 100/f2

Funny, I was typing this when you posted your last... still, look at the review, it'll help solidify your decision.  :)

Here's a link from within a review for the E-p2, where you can compare similar shots taken with the g12 or any number of other cameras.  Feel free to browse some pretty direct comparisons (all things being as equal as I could imagine) and make the conclusion yourself.  It looks to me as though the e-p2 thumps the g12 even at low iso, but then gets better and better the higher you go.  I looked at the g11 before I purchased my E-p1, and I haven't looked back since.  Keep in mind you will be wanting more lenses than the kit... so consider your investment.  Yes, size can be a factor, but the 4/3 performance is worth the bulk.  Truth be told, my E-p1 and 20mm panny combination is pretty darn pocketable.  If you ask me, it's m4/3 all the way, and luckily you have lots of options from there!  Good luck!
