New EP-0?
« on: January 27, 2010, 01:40:47 PM »
Next week there will be new cameras from Olympus.  Rumored is a new m43, that is made from plastic, and is cheaper than the EP-1.  Plus, it uses a touch screen instead of buttons for navigation/settings.  Has a built in flash.  No news if it has an EVF.  Hmm, smaller and lighter than an EP-1, sounds cool to me.  I wonder if it will survive the drop from 6' test.

Think it's the E-P3 or a different level of E-P cameras?

People are guessing that it's a compact camera without interchangable lenses. The form factor of it doesn't look like it.

Sorta looks like the 17mm pancake but really tough to tell.  Lots of speculation that it will be a Fixed lens advanced compact a la G11 or LX3.  Whatever it is, i can't afford it after i bought the e-p2.  But anything that brings more to the m43 table is fine by me.

Quite a few rumors. Here is a summary.

* smaller - this seems sure based on the picture
* fewer controls on back, no wheel? Touch screen instead? - smaller means something will  be left off for sure.
* Plastic body
* Built in flash?
* interchangeable lens/fixed lens - 2 schools of thought. I vote interchangeable lens but who knows.
* Price around $500 US  - this seems certain, it has to fit under the E-P1.
* E-P1 / E-P2 not discontinued, this is the "low end"
* No video mode. - Might be for a "low end".

Pretty interesting!

When the E-P1 came out, in interviews I think it was said there were going to be higher and lower models. We have the E-P2 as a (not much) higher model, but we haven't seen a lower model yet. Could this be it? So my guess is low end interchangeable lens camera. What they can cut down for it is beyond my guessing but I'd suggest sensor stabilisation could be one to reduce size and cost.
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!

I'm guessing no movie mode, no physical controls (no wheel or roller, just a couple buttons), just a touch screen, fine for casual shooters. Maybe no IS.  Maybe no manual mode. Built in flash for snapshots.  I'm guessing interchangeable lenses since they have probably gotten their development costs back on them and it is a lot cheaper to keep that line running now making the 17mm and the kit zoom. Plus if people buy a low end with a lens, they will be back looking for an upgrade in a year and want to re-use that lens.

Exciting times indeed.  If these specs hold up, I'll be able to recommend and affordable, awesome, camera to my friends and family.  I like the low-end, but am really looking forward to the high-high end.

This is in the "Stylus" section on the Oly website tho.  Seems to go against interchangeable lens theory.  Hope i'm wrong tho.  Would love a lower end "beat it up" model that I can take out hiking and not worry about trashing.  I swear i treat my EP2 better then I've treated some of my past gf's, and I ain't talking panasonics here.

I guess you all have a point. But if I were in Olympus' shoes I would be searching for a way to push an interchangeable lens system (micro 4/3 of course) into where high-end compact cameras stand. Sure Olympus have their ways to do so, since they now make the cheapest DSLR.
I also think that if they are to eat up market share from rivals, they will have to propose a comparable product - this is why IS, built-in flash, video recording and zoom lens all seem obligatory.
What they might want to keep is art filters ( at least some of them) and RAW shooting as a distinctive feature.
What might be lower end now seems to be body materials, DSP speed (may be no series shots or series only in lower resolution?). I am 90% sure that this rummored thingy will also lack optical viewfinder and have a plastic lens mount.
If they are to push m4/3 in this higher-end compact camera segment, as I suspect, they will definitely have to lower prices and probably sell for a lower margin, only to gain recognision for the new format and increase market penetration, in order to later on sell lenses and higher-end bodies. If they drop features, which compacts already have, they will most probably fail.
That's all personal oppinion anyway.

Well, an EVIL camera should be cheaper to produce than a DSLR so there is no reason it has to be more expensive than the E-450, with the same features (+ video which hardly adds to the manufacturing cost).

LOL :)

My E-P2 has been in my bag EVERY SINGLE DAY since I had it in Dec.
No camera could have this position before.

Sounds like it might be thinner than the E-P1, they could do that if they left the IS out, or if they left the LCD off the back and used an EFV.  They can't change the lens to sensor distance of course, but they can get rid of stuff that is in back of the sensor.

They are not likly to leave the LCD off the back.

My guess is that it isn't going to be any smaller. They may ditch the IS, but I would be a little surprised at that too. I think the weight will be down about 40g.

Out goes the stainless stell wrap and the whole body frame would need to be different but you get a flash and a pretty dated looking plastic body with metal or faux metal top/bottom/sides. Very circa Kodak Instamatic 1968.

Less art filters and a single command dial at the top near the shutter button.

I think the E-P1 will be gone in a couple of months, the E-P2 will come down in price and be offered without the EVF for the old E-P1 price and a new top end MFT camera will come into the scene, hopefully with either a polycarbonate body or a magnesium alloy body so it can take a bit of rough and tough. Weather sealing only the most remote possiblility unless they bought out a lens to go with it.

The E-P1 certainly could not survive a 6' drop. The top and bottom plates are thin aluminium pressings and the stainless body parts are just held on by a couple of screws. I am hoping the future up-market model (E-P3?) will be a bit more robust.
Be nice to each other, life is too short for anything else.

My EP-1 did survive a 6' drop onto a carpeted floor thankfully.  It actually landed on the 14-42mm lens.  I thought the lens would be gonner for sure.  Everything works fine after I used a knife to pry out the UV filter from the lens.  I don't think I had the filter fully screwed in, so it got jammed in the threads and wouldn't focus.  I'm pretty rough with cameras, you should see how beat up my Nikon n90s looks.  So far the EP-1 has been a tough little bugger.  Last weekend, I brought it with me snowboarding, but decided not to take it out because the snow was falling too hard.  I really could use a E-Ptough model in the long run.  Maybe, this new model will be "tough" series camera.  If so, I will most likely get my sister to buy it and trade with her my EP-1.

This new E-P won’t have a screen on the back at all. Instead, it’ll have an etch-a-sketch.

Nobody can say with any degree of authority. So, yes it is. Probably. Unless it isn’t.
