Legacy lenses on E-P2
« on: January 15, 2010, 09:55:03 AM »
Hi Group,

I received my Nikon to micro 4/3 adaptor (from China $35, shipping included) and I am trying out some Nikon AIS lenses. The process goes like this:

1. Open aperture all the way
2. Turn on zoom assist (7x is more than good enough)
3. Focus
4. Turn off zoom assist
5. Set desired aperture
6. Take picture

I think with Exakta or Topcon lenses the aperture can be pre-set. Before taking the picture simply push and hold the button on the lens. No need to take your eye of the view finder:

1. Pre-set aperture
2. Turn on zoom assist
3. Focus
4. Turn off zoom assist
5. Press and hold lens button
6. Take picture

There may be adaptors that have a feature that allows aperture preset with Nikon lenses?

Anybody interested in sharing experiences on this subject or with legacy lenses in general?

Ray

Thanks for your input!

I'd like to know more about this as well, as I'm about to receive my Nikon adaptor.  Does anyone else have any more information?  Thanks!

Interesting. I don't know much about 110 cameras. I guess the 110 film format has about the same diagonal as the micro 3/4 sensor.

1. Why can you use the lenses only wide open?
2. What are the best 110 lenses to use on the E-P1/2?

cosinaphile gave us an excellent account on his venture on Pentax 110 lens on E-P1:

Basically, the lens does not aperture control.
To stop down the aperture, people think of using a hole in a black paper ("pinhole" of various sizes) to do the job.

the tiniest 110 lenses come out of old 110 mass market cameras, the lower priced ones had a fixed focus of about 5 feet to infinity they range from about 20 mm to 26 mm  and about f4 to 4.5 some are better than others  but all are usable hanamex had an underwater  110 whose tiny lens is easy to remove and mount in a drilled lens cap,   it barely protrudes when positioned for correct infinity focus

the 4 element 20mm f4 lens in a tiny brass housing is the finest fixed focus lens ive comeacross , its not bad at all optically at all and sharpness is good , the diaphram presents a problem  and it more challanging to adapt those to a  lens cap project,   the lens is the size of a pencil eraser and sits practically flush with the front of the lens cap, meking the flattest len i believe possible

the best non pentax 110 len is a canon 26 mm f2.0 which needs a focus mechanism im adapting one with a mini flashlight helicoid now, i used plumbing fixtures previously but they are too large for my tastes
the canon lens is really good but at f2 too fast to use without some sort of stop down solution

Will the shutter fire with screen on 7x zoom?  Might save a step when time is an issue.

Unfortunately no - you have to exit the magnified "MF Assist" mode first.
Sort of makes it a bit more clumsy than it should be.

Actually, yes, you can fire the shutter when the zoom is on.

You just don’t have any accurate idea of the framing at that point because it might have moved in the meantime since you went into magnify mode.
