ISO100,125,160,200 comparison on E-P1
« on: April 23, 2011, 01:04:31 PM »
I just made some pictures and magnified it to 400%. The iso you can still see in each frame on the title. Camera was set to M and shutter speed adjusted according to the display.

Flat 400%

Sky 400%

That's not bad at all. I found with my Panasonic G1, even at ISO 100 with sky's, (or large solid colors) that a little outside help in noise reduction helps. Just a light application though, to just smooth out the very tiny speckles in the solid blue sky's.

These are a tad better than my G1 at these ISO's, But, only marginally, I also set my in-camera NR to "-2" though, and deal with any noise latter in post if I need to.

Just wanted to show the difference because ISO200 seems to have higher DR than ISO100. Not sure about intermediate levels (125/160) though.

That's because the sensor has to digitally downgrade your ISO 100 photo as the base ISO on the E-P1 is 200.

What Voyager said. ISO200 is the base for the sensor, so you don't actually gain in setting a lower level. It does use a longer exposure so you in theory reduce shadow noise at the loss of highlight headroom.

I wouldnt say that, because i can see little difference in noise between ISO100 and 200. But it seems not be worth to use ISO100.

I did some cheapo test, i fotographed an jpeg with a T4110 grey scale on my screen and i saw that the dynamic range seems to be the same in ISO100,125,160. So this i wanted to see if it makes sense to use ISO125 or 160, because dpreview didnt tested this and the result is "no".
Starting ISO 200 its getting a lot better, but the best result i had at ISO250. As you can see the text is a bit over brightened at ISO200, i think the dynamic performance should probably be the same compared to 250.

Thanks for your effort in making these. 200 and 250 should indeed be equal in DR, as long as they are exposed equally.
