How many have gone back to JPEGs after getting EP1/EP2???
« on: December 12, 2009, 09:19:42 AM »
I have always been very impressed with the Oly JPEGs (going back to the E10 and E1) but switched to RAW when using the E510 because of the better DR - in particular holding highlights.
Now I have the EP2 (sold an EP1) and have been VERY impressed with the JPEGs.
So - anyone who was a dedicated RAW shooter switch back?
Steve

I still like RAW because it's easier to edit more if I want to.

Raw is all I ever do. I like the available options.
Why limit yourself? True, Pen makes great jpegs but it makes even better raw files.....

Steve, saw ya across the street at that other spot.

My whole point of ditching my Canon EOS stuff and going to the E-P1 was to simplify things, and that includes reducing post-processing. So yes, I've switched from RAW to JPEG. All that I heard and read about the E-P1's JPEG image quality helped solidify my decision, and I haven't been disappointed.

RAW+JPEG! Memory is cheap!!  Why limit your options? I consider the RAW file to be a "negative" that I can, if needed, use to pull out a great print. The JPEG is the fast drugstore print that you show your friends; albeit with the E-P1, it's a very, very good print!

Me...........I'm now using fully jpeg.

The color is nice and image is sharp.....

Even my D700 can't match up with E-P1 on the sharpness of the jpeg that produce by E-P1

I honestly never used JPEG on my E-P1. I like having the idea of a digital negative.

You've never used a darkroom then. :-)

I only use jpeg now, and I've also cut the shooting size down to the medium size after I saw the immense chunk of my MacBook's hard drive it ate. I don't need 12 megapixels when my Nikon D50 is excellent at 6 megapixels, and I thought my Nikon 995 was perfectly good at 3.3 megapixels until it broke. I also find myself deleting wasted shots in camera now.

The difference between 6 megapixels and 12 was definitely something that I noticed too.

I've shot with a few cameras (mostly compacts/bridges) that shoot RAW over the years, Sony R1, Ricoh GRD and Canon G9 amongst others, and I have *always* shot RAW+JPEG, and 90% of the time edited the RAW file to get my print.

Now... well, I can't leave the habit of shooting RAW+JPEG (I keep feeling like I'll miss out on something whenever I do!) but I have yet to go back to a RAW file, all my prints are from the JPEGS...

I went back to JPEG already with the E-3. With the E-1 before that, I used to shoot RAW. With the E-P1 I always shoot JPEG.

the jpegs from the ep1\2 may be the best out there they are that good

, ive done a little raw , but unless i had a special project using multiple images for hdr or i wanted to recover exposure info for a special use , i dont see the purpose in using it as a default recording mode , it adds work and file size that in almost all cases is unnecessary

I find with the E-P1 that 99% of the work is done for me with the JPEG and I have yet to get the end output of my RAW files to look better, so yeah, I have ditched RAW.

I shoot RAW just to have the option of playing with Art Filters later in OM2.

I'm new to the photography game.  And honestly editing RAW files intimidates me.  I doubt I could do better then the JPEG output from the EP2.  So i don't see any need to switch to RAW

Lightroom makes editing RAW images pretty easy though if you want to give it a try sometime.

I have just uninstalled Lightroom 3 beta which I used to have a play around with RAW files for the past couple of months. I found it infuriatingly painful. I can see that once you set up what you want to do, that batch processing is a breeze but it is difficult to find the right controls when you know what you want to do but have yet to learn the product fully.

>Lightroom makes editing RAW images pretty easy though if you want to give it a try sometime. Yes, but unless you have a very fast computer RAW images displays much slower on the screen. So just sorting out the keepers takes much longer when they are in RAW format.

I'm shooting raw + (LSF) jpeg for the same reason as count_zero - I want to use the art filters in OM2, or have the option of going back to colour after shooting in b&w etc.  I am very new to using raw at all, I don't have lightroom, just OM2 & photoshop CS on a five year old iMac G5.  I'll updated photoshop when I eventually get a new mac.
