High ISO Samples
« on: July 01, 2009, 01:41:25 AM »
I've seen a few around, and they seem incredibly good for a camera with a M4/3 sensor in it. Does anyone else agree?

Strangely enough, after posting this topic I was shown the image on this thread:

http://e-p1.net/index.php?topic=14.msg22#new

For some reason the noise levels on it are higher than any I had seen.

When I saw the 6400 I honestly thought it was 1600.

Here's a quick test I just did. The subject - I couldn't resist for obvious reasons. :D

Key settings were aperture priority mode to f/8. ISO varied. Whole scene metering. AWB. Camera on tripod and 2 second delay. Focus on the PEN2. Below lossless crops from camera jpeg (large fine). Other settings as the camera arrived.

ISO100

ISO200

ISO400

ISO800

ISO1600

ISO3200

ISO6400

Notice how ISO100 and ISO6400 are slightly different colour from the mid range. The chroma noise is extremely well controlled, leaving varying levels of luminance noise and general softening as the ISO is increased. Out of the box, the auto ISO range is up to 1600. This seems a reasonable choice for general use as the 3200 setting is where significant noise and detail loss really kick in hard. Not surprisingly 6400 is worse.

Yes if you give us the focal length and settings for those photos maybe we can put together our own review of the E-P1. Might help bring people here if we're the first to have a full review of it.

Lens was the kit zoom at 31mm. Note the exif is intact if you want to examine that. I think I listed all the important settings used, the rest are at camera defaults.

Would you mind if I added them to a faux review that we can continue to work on?

Help yourself, but please copy the images elsewhere for use as I'm not sure my hosting would take too many viewings.

My take is that on the E-P1 the noise looks more film like than similar sized cameras....

The folks I sold the camera to so far love the colors they are getting over what they have seen in other digital cameras...

I have my late night smoke on my balcony, and lately I've been entranced by a back lit bougainvillaea bud next to me, so I decided to try the E-P1 at max iso to get it.  Here is my result:

E-P1
Cosmicar/Pentax 25/1.4
1/8th sec
f/1.4
iso 6400
processed through OV2, CS3 and Neat Image Pro

Not great, but decent.  I had to clean up some huge banding, which you can still see some.

ISO 3200

More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

The worst part about the E-P1 is that you literally have to use ISO 100, and that's sometimes not even good enough (perhaps my settings aren't right, or I got a bad sensor), but even at ISO 200 I notice tons of noise.
