EP-1 Firmware
« on: July 18, 2011, 05:33:53 AM »
Hi guys

I am just wondering with the imminent release of the EP-3, will we see any new firmware love for the EP-1, and maybe bring over some funtionality over with it?

For example the menus look great on the EP-3, and a little boost in auto focus performance would be nice!

Any thoughts as to what new EP-3 features could be applied to the EP-1 through hardware alone?

Adam

Hi, Adam, and welcome to the forum.
Although those improvements in E-P3 are great, it is very unlikely to see them in E-P1.
Effort from the developer teams will probably focus on new camera models and not the old ones.
A version for better support of the newest lenses may be released, but new features in it should not be expected.
BTW, AF is <much> faster with a faster lens even on E-P1. I have 14-150 and 14-42 first version and I can say it is way faster with the 14-150.
No good for galloping horses yet, but anyway faster.

I think at best there *might* be scope to further speed up AF on the E-P1. I'm not suggesting it'll be anywhere near E-P3 fast, as that almost certainly required new hardware support. But possibly some of that is due to better algorithms which might work back also. They have provided firmware updates in the past to improve AF speed, but I'm guessing it is close to if not already at its limit already.

Unfortunately, adash is correct: Olympus has little reason to update the E-P1 firmware for anything other than major bugs discovered. They want to provide as much incentive as possible to move you up to their E-P3...  :-\

The better LCD, pop-up flash, touch screen, and not to mention the faster AF are all things that can't be applied to the E-P1.
