E-PL1 flash
« on: February 03, 2010, 12:11:34 PM »
I'm assuming it will mostly be best used as a fill flash in low light situations? How well has the GF-1's flash done with this?

Like the GF1, the flash will probably be best at higher ISOs. With a GN of only 7 feet! at ISO 100 (10 at ISO 200? why is that different?) That means that with the provided lens wide open at ISO 100 the flash is only good for 2 feet! At ISO 200 it would be good to 3 feet. You are going to have to use ISO 1600 to get any distance out of it.

The GN is 7 metres at ISO 100 and 10 metres at ISO 200. The default ISO of the Pen cameras is ISO 200 so that is the most useful one.

As for the range, = GN/f-stop, so at f/4 and at ISO 200 you have a maximum distance of 2.5 metres (around 7.5 feet).

It is totally inadequate and other than as a trigger for remote flashes or boosting the ISO to 400 where you will have an effective GN of 14 metres, pretty limited.

Why does the GN increase with higher ISO - because the camera is boosting the light levels. It doesn't matter the source of the light, flash or natural, the effect is the same.
Be nice to each other, life is too short for anything else.

I thought that the spec was in feet, but if it is in meters that is better than I thought.

The E-PL1 flash is predictably wimpy. The big problem I see is the design. That pop-up mechanism looks REALLY weak. Like most questionable designs, I suspect that it will eventually divide E-PL1 users into two groups: those that HAVE broken the pop-up mechanism, and those that WILL.  ;)

The GF-1's flash looks almost identical to it.

Well hopefully a plus and minus EV control if the flash is available.

the kit flash is dependable for the ep1 [fl14] for manual lenses giving fairly well exposed and repeatable exposures  , i just wish trhe fl-14would  have allowed the used to choose full  to  1\16 flash  output instead of the flash exposure comp which is  very undependable

the built in flash on the gf1 is a nightmare for anything but the af lenses ive used the 17 and the 14-45 panny
and the gf1 will then play nice  , mf lenses dramatically over or underexpose with the built in flash70 percent of the time

i hope the epL1`s flash is a better affair
