E-PL1 doesn't seem to get much love here
« on: July 10, 2010, 07:48:10 PM »
My imagination, or are there really good reasons? It seems the most versatile "Jack of all trades" Pen body.
thanks

You got it wrong. Me personally not liking plastic bodies and lack of rotating dials on the back doesn't mean that people around don't like it. In fact since it's introduction, most of the new members around are getting exactly this model - both price and versatility, I think.

It's the newest camera, actually there are quite a few members here who have one.

I've got one! I felt I needed the flash, which I almost never use LOL. There are some other advantages as well, not to mention the price. As much as I baby my electronics i wasn't concerned about the plastic body. Since I have caught the "bug" I suspect I will go with something a little more beefy next go around, most likely the E3 replacement, that way I'll be able to use some of the lens that I have already purchased.

I LOVE and hate my E-PL1, LOL.
I hate it mostly because i'm used to a Zoom Camera.
Needless to say, i'm in the learning stages and I think my hate will fade. LOL

It's taking me a little to get used to manually turning the lens to zoom in and out. Well that and the no AF assist light. ( Although my LED pointer light is seeing some action. )

My only complaint is that I would have liked it in RED, but I live in the states ... So Basic Black was the best option.

It really is a great camera but all photo-magazines which reviewed it that I have read say that owners of E-P1 and P2 should not upgrade. Guess many consumers think the same and stick with their cameras.

i think people should stop reading product reviews and try it in the store.

i always have a requirement before i buy a camera/lens.

1. i travel, hence the setup has to be lightweight. (Plastic works great) ----just as how the Nikon F80 works better than my F100.

2. I put the camera in my bag (not a photo-bag), so size is important. I love hanging out in cafe with ambience lighting with my friends. I can dress up for the weekend without looking like a bloody fool holding a SLR and having a lowepro camera bag.

3. the ISO -800 & 1600 is very good, comparing to other camera's 800&1600 iso. (I hate flash, so the 20mm f1.7 lens is perfect + AF)

So i am a happy user.

what kinda bug?

Just to share:

when i upgraded the firmware, my camera start to "hang" & "lag" and the shutter release don't quite work. so i went into the menu and set all the settings back to default and removed the battery for a while.

When i put them back, it works perfect but i got to set all the custom settings again. so i hope this helps with your "bug".

Think he means the "photography bug". I think he wants to get something a little more "professional" or "Heavy-duty" next time around?

This is correct.

Stella"BLACK" doesn't like the black finish? I would think it would be StellaRed :)

E-PL1 seems to be a good solution also for price, little new features on this but if somebody  proposed me an exchange with mine penelope (e-p1) I I would answer without hesitation: no!!!

Well, the E-PL1 wasn't really intended as an "upgrade" to the E-P1/P2 (I guess that's why they didn't call it the "E-P3"). It's aimed at a slightly different market--away from the early adopters and enthusiasts and more toward the mainstream: those who want better quality than the Canon G11 or Panasonic LX3 for approximately the same price. What may hamper the E-PL1 is the customer will quickly discover that most of the mass market retailers selling these things don't stock any of the accessories and that buying virtually anything for it will cost as much or more again as the camera itself. But that is the nature of interchangeable lens cameras.

Unfortunately like many other companies, Olympus made a little mistake in their perceived audience for the E-PL1 and it seems a lot more people think that it's an upgrade from the E-P1 than a downgrade (EVF addition, new AA filter, etc).

And don't forget the addition of the BUILT-IN FLASH, which many will interpret as Olympus admitting that it was a mistake to omit it from the E-P1. But I agree that their marketing of the E-PL1 differs little from the original PEN marketing, thus confusing people into thinking it's a "newer and better" PEN.

I never thought the lack of a built in flash was a marketing error for the E-P1, but I rarely and I mean very rarely use the flash on any camera that I have, I almost always go with available light. I can understand how it's a marketing error for the rest of the people they were reaching for though.

What they should have done is put the E-P2 and the E-PL1 out at each other’s prices, instead.

It wasn't a marketing error for the people Olympus was targetting initially with the E-P1: the 35mm rangefinder crowd and those old enough to remember that SLRs never had flashes in the first place. But then to try to gouge people $300 for a tiny little flash (not much bigger than an Optex slave flash I got for $20) that they only required occasionally was an insult. And there's no way they could've attracted the P&S crowd with a flashless camera--esp. since its direct competitor GF1 had one.

I think they did kind of admit their mistake about the lack of flash.

When I bought my E-P1 in March this year the matching flash was a free 'bar-code' offer from Olympus - given that the price was already significantly dropped this was simply an additional bonus for me.

I never use it and I would have bought the camera at the lower price regardless but I'm sure it brought over some who were wary about the lack and the steep asking price as an accessory.

If I recall correctly, they initially corrected this by adding the flash with a coupon that made it only $100.

The offers varied quite a bit depending where you are. I had heard of the $99 FL-14 flash deal, but that was U.S.-only. In the U.K., they were giving away FL-14s with each E-P1 (:(). Here in Canada, by the time I bought mine, the best deal I could find was a $100 discount, bringing the unit down to $149 Cdn. (The regular price was as high as $299--ouch!)

I believe there is a cable release for the E-series DLSRs that work on the PEN. Somebody in another thread posted a link to it on Amazon. I'll see if I can find it.

It was still perfect for people who don't use flash such as myself, but I understand it took out a considerable segment of people.

It is nice to have it on the E-PL1 though, but how effective is it?

If found it better then the flash on my Nikon D60 but I mostly I cover the flash with my hand (yes, seriously) when I use it. It makes a really nice effect and not the hard, cold light.
