E-P3 with lenses (17 + 14-42) from E-P1
« on: August 22, 2011, 04:42:41 AM »
I have an E-P1, and I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, but will the new fast autofocus for the E-P3 work with the original lenses for the E-P1? I'm tempted by the E-P3, but it's less tempting if the fast autofocus depends on the new lenses.

I believe it will (this is of course just an assumption, based on the high AF speed demonstrated in a video of E-P3+an adapted 4/3 lens ZD 12-60) but not as fast as E-P3+the newest kit lens Olympus ZD MICRO 14-42MM F/3.5-5.6 ED II R MSC.
Furthermore, the price difference between the body only and body+kit zoom should be small (~$130 in my area), so for fastest AF you should really get the kit.

There are several comments regarding this buried in several topics about the E-P3.  Based on what I have read, the newer MSC lens' firmware can be upgraded for faster focus with the E-P3.

This will not include the original 14-42 ED only lens (what I have).  The 14-42 MkII lens will.

The first gen 14-42mm is a bit of dog with focus speed, but supposedly it is slightly sharper along the edges than version 2.  The E-P3 does focus slightly faster with the first gen 14-42mm mainly because it wastes less time seeking focus in low light.  The actual speed of the motor doesn't change.

The 17mm is ridiculously fast.  It makes me giddy how fast it focuses.  I need to get the new 45mm f1.8 considering how cheep and remarkably sharp it is as well.  No reason to wait for a 12-60mm f2.8 high end.  I feel like I have superiority complex now over my Leica friends.
