E-P3 video test
« on: July 06, 2011, 11:24:52 PM »
Cool video test from Slovakia demo day.  I like the film in Dramatic tone filter.  I don't notice any roller shutter jello effect in this video or other test videos I've seen on youtube, contrary to what the CNET review says, but no one has really done quick pans that would exacerbate the problem.

If CNET wanted to they would find any possible problem with any camera and make it so much worse than it actually is. This video is great.

Although I am not getting a E-P3, the Panasonic G3 also has HD video... and I have never had a video before, so this You-Tube preview is pretty nice, and very smooth. And shows me, I might have fun with it.

I've read on a different blog that the 30min recording time limit exists in the GH2 because of EU tax law that states any camera that can record longer than 30 minutes of video is considered a video camera and subject to higher tax rate.  Apparently, there is a hack to remove the 30minute limit on the GH2.  Hopefully, we will have a similar hack for the E-P3.

I've really never understood people's issues with a 20 or 30 minute limit. Day-in and day-out I rarely shoot a take that goes beyond 20 minutes. Somewhere long ago someone beat it into me that long uninterrupted takes are asking for trouble. Smaller takes are also a hell-of-a-lot easier to manage in post. Before HD the basic pro standard ENG and EFP cameras shot a 30 minute tape, (dvc-pro cameras could shoot longer tapes but the tape would be thinner and I didn't like that idea). The Sony HDcam format which was the first successful HD pro cams and decks shot a 40minute tape but it wasn't like people were crying for the potential to shoot a 40 minute take. So why would someone want 30 minute + takes? Surveillance?

So maybe folks are confused that the DSLRs will only store 30 minutes of video? That is not the case.

It's useful if you are filming a sport, play, concert, or making a movie in one long continuous take like Russian Ark.

To reiterate: there is extremely limited practical demand for this feature. I can think of 10 or more other things that are missing from the video feature set of an EP3 that make way more practical difference. I think there might even be a workaround with HDMI out and an external data recorder if you want to run a camera until your batts go dead.
