I compared the E-P3 with the E-P2 at Imaging Resouce's comparometer.
At iso 1600 (the indoor model shot) there is a HUGE improvement. It's definitely not just noise reduction. The detail reproduction is better too. This really looks promising.

If you compare the E-P3 at 1600 iso with the E-P2 at 800 iso, the detail is roughly the same but the E-P3 still has less noise, due to noise reduction. Also, the E-P3 still has better colours. So it's at least one stop improvement. Not bad at all!

Moving to the E-P3 board.

The E-P3 is definitely better up to ISO 1600. Not sure what happened at ISO 3200 though.

I also compared the E-P3 to the Panasonic G3, both at 1600 iso. The G3 has slightly better detail but slightly more noise (less noise reduction). The colours from the G3 look rather awful to me though. The E-P3 has extremely good colours. Better than the E-P1/2, which were already better than most.

Just for fun I compared it to the NEX-5 at 1600 iso too.
The quality is suprisingly similar! The E-P3 has slightly more noise reduction and sharpening but the detail is almost the same. Colours are rather similar too. E-P3 is the best but the NEX has better colour than the G3.
The E-P3 has some faint yellow blotches at 1600 iso (gone at 800 iso). Apart from this, I would say the image quality at 1600 iso is every bit as good as the NEX-5.

Yellow blotches? Doesn't sound promising, but I am keeping an open mind. How do you explain the rather negative review on the digitalcamerainfo site? Are you predicting better reviews in the future?

I can't explain any other review. I don't have the camera myself. I'm just referring to what I see in the images at The Imaging Resource. Just go there and see for yourself. The link is in the original post.

yes my hopes raised just a bit ep3 with the 12 and the 45 and panny 25 will be my walkabout kit with a manual lens sometimes

I just compared the E-P3 to the E5 at 1600 iso. The faint yellow blotches look EXACTLY the same on the E5! So this unfortunately indicates that the sensor is basically the same. The E-P3 has more sharpening and noise reduction but that's in all likelihood thanks to the new image processor. Still, the image at 1600 iso is quite useable and quite a lot better than the E-P1 and E-P2-

You're right, I'm wrong.....In fact, I'm going to take pictures today with an ƒ4.0 - 5.6 lens & I'm going to shoot at ISO 400 without a tripod so I can better my technique....

I dont think its better than the NEX 5, and its certainly not the best 4/3s sensor ever made like we were told...the G3 looks better to me at ISO 3200 than the EP3 at 1600. But you know, I have panny goggles..

Ill give you this though..it is considerably better (not leaps and bounds but still) than the EP2.
Bottom line is, if you like the output you like the output.

Right. Personally, I don't like the colours from the G3 (or Panny in general) and I don't have a need for iso 3200 so I would still prefer the E-P3. But I'm probably going to wait for the Pro-Pen and buy the new lenses in the meantime.

I wander if the Panny Pro will have the same sensor as the as the G3, but with keeping the same MP count with different formats. That would give you a little less MPs than the G3, but, and I'd guess the image engine may also be tweaked a bit different for IQ.

Back to OT:
I'm glad to hear that the P3 is a good improvement over easier models and not just a feature set update.

they could screw it all up and come out with a 24 mp sensor... everytime Sony announces something I get nervous...
Panny should stay were they are and call it enough.

IM SO HOPING FOR a gfx with a great sensor and a proish feature set , if they would announce it soon
i might not get the ep3
