E-P1 - my first digital camera
« on: November 16, 2010, 02:45:03 AM »
Bought an E-P1 kit with the 14-42mm Zuiko lens for €250 refurbished from a German retailer. I guess the price was very nice although it came sans instruction manual.

It's my first digital camera and my first camera in almost 15 years. So it's a big step for me into the world of photography. I'm still trying to absorb the most fundamental concepts.

I also bought a 40-150mm/3.5-4.5 Zuiko lens, but didn't realise that this one's for the larger DSLR format and thus needs an adapter. The MMF-1 is more than €100 even second-hand, so I'm going to sell this lens and try to find one made for the four thirds format. I'd like to know if you think the 40-150mm/3.5-4.5 lens compliments the kit 14-42mm well, or if there's a more obvious choice in the budget range. Or maybe I should stick with the 14-42mm until I know what I'm doing - how versatile is it?

Another question - I bought a leather 'retro jacket' (model name CS-10B) for the cam. But now I'm not sure if the thing serves any meaningful purpose. At €35 I think it's expensive for what it is. What do you think - should I return it?

Hi odd!
First of all: Welcome.  And congrat with your new camera & lenses.  There are members in here who are more competent to answer your questions than what I am, - but as I have had my m43 gear for almost a year now, I feel quite assured that you will be happy with your purchase.  The 14-42 kit lens is not a top-top lens, but I feel it's more than adequate for a lot of situations, - just have a look at photos taken with that lens, in here, as well as at flickr dot com.  The other one, 40-150, I have no experience with, - but other members in here will surely be able to advise you in that matter.  I own, however, a Panasonic Lumix 20mm/f1.7, and that one I can highly recommend.  After some time you should try that out and consider it, -. or the Oly's 17mm/f2.8 of similar type ("pancake").  About your CS-10B, - if it is the jacket I have in mind, - I believe to give good protection of your camera, and you should keep it,  :)  Yes, the price of the jacket is horrible, - it should probably have costed less than half.   But that's how things works with this hobby, - as soon as you move away from the simpler P&S cameras.  DSLR´s are even worse in that department.  All the best, - and good luck with your shooting!

@ odd:

here's a link that will supply you with a manual to download, - English version:

I´m sure you should be able to find other languages (French, Spanish, German) as well.  Just google for it.

A lot of places sell the Olympus 40-150mm Mark II lens (the newer one) and the adapter together, and it is also possible to get the Panasonic's version of the Four Thirds to Micro Four Thirds adapter for about half the price of Olympus, even though they do the same thing. Welcome to the forum!
