Do I want the E-P3?!?
« on: October 28, 2011, 05:29:12 AM »
I am pretty sure I know the answer already but....

I have the E-P1 and love it.   Is the handling of the E-P3 that much better?  Is it worth forking out again?  I know, depends on whether money is no object.....  Let's just say the expense won't break the bank but would make me feel a little guilty.....

I upgraded from E-P1 to E-P3.  It's worth it.  The touch screen is great.  Resolution of the screen is superb, a massive improvement over the E-P1.  And the continuous AF tracking is real cool too when used with the touch screen.

The E-P3 is better in every possible way.

I think that's actually a true fact.

I've had to go back to using my E-P1 after my E-P3 crashed during a firmware update (it's gonna take 3-4 weeks to get if fixed), and I must say the E-P1 still feels great to me. In some respects I even prefer it over the E-P3. I like the button layout better, and the bottom plate has a more rounded edge, which makes it slightly more comfortable to hold than the E-P3 IMO. The slow autofucos was a bit frustrating at first, but I was surprised by how quickly I forgot that I had "downgraded".

That said, I can't wait to get my hands back on the E-P3 :D

I had an E P1 and an E P2. I traded my E P1 for and E P3. The difference to me is quite apparent in the way the camera functions and the resulting pictues.
Of course adding the 12mm lens made a difference as well. To me both were worth it and I was able to trade a couple of lenses with the E P1 to cut down on the cost.

People keep telling me that the E-P1 feels sturdier and stronger than the E-P3, is that true?

I really like the design and the way the E P1 feels when using it. The E P3 is a slightly different body dimensionally, but not noticable to me.
I could have held out for the silver, but our local store had the black one and I think it's equally attractive, and the color didnt matter to me that much.
I find it easier to use the controls, I like the faster focusing, and the screen is really superior, and of course bigger.
To me it's clearly a step up, and I know I'm taking better pictures.
I am fairly new to this. I bought an E PL1 june 2010, and the E P1 last fall. I think the IQ of the E PL1 was better, but I don't think I always had my E P1 set right. I find it easier with the E P3 to set the parameters better, if that makes sense.
The pictures you take with your E P1 are far superior to anything I have taken with any of my cameras, so it's still the shooter and not the camera. But for me the E P3 has been worth the change.
This past Summer I got a really good deal on the E P2 off ebay. I mostly got it for the Gariz case the viewfinder and the EVF. For the price I paid, the body was virtually free, so it made it easier to trade my E P1. I stll use the E P2 a lot, mostly with the 20mm lens.

And any huge differences in picture quality ?

None whatsoever. Sure, the E-P3 has much better noise reduction in the jpeg engine, but I only shoot RAW, so that doesn't affect me. It does seem to get more accurate exposures in P, A and S mode, which is very important at higher ISO settings. But with identical shutter speed and aperture settings, there is absolutely no difference.

The E-P1 has huge issues with noise, especially at ISO 200. Those aren't fixed in the E-P3? I thought they actually were.

I think it's mainly due to the E-P3 being lighter and having a more "crowded" button/control layout. And I've seen examples of the mode dial coming off, apparently it's just superglued in place. But those are just small details really.

The E-P1 has huge issues with noise, especially at ISO 200. Those aren't fixed in the E-P3? I thought they actually were.

I've never had any such issues with mine... ISO 200 looks great (on both cameras). Sure, you get more noise than from a full frame or APS-C sensor, but that's only natural.

No. As far as I can see, the sensor output is identical in every aspect.
