I believe they all have mechanical shutters.

Not so important before it reaches 100'000.

These cameras are made for 30-50k shutters, where as more top end camera's are made for 100k shutters...

If  you take 500 pictures a week at 52 weeks....that's 26k a year, so your good a 2-3 years at least...by then you'll buy a newer model.

Well, how many did you have?

I had 3311 which was put on there by the first owner. Only had the camera for two days and maybe 100 shots before I checked.

WOW! thanks for the info, very helpful. My E-P1 was bought used and i have just found out that it has 628 shutter actuation which is nothing! Whoop whoop!

This is a good thing to know when buying a used Olympus. I got 13,300...at this rate it won't last 3 or 4 years.

Now that´s an interesting thing i found out today!
these steps work also for the T8010 and the T6020 tough cameras! and you get the shutter count and the number of flash firings.
i also tried it on the other compacts: VR320, Fe4020 and the SP600 camera and it seems to work with some variation. i was able to set the black screen but the next code didn´t worked.

does anyone knows any other funny trick like this one?

i wander if tough cameras also get a register of how many times have been dropped too hidden somewhere ????

I just got my e-p3 repaired  :(, and I noticed something that could affect the shutter count of a Pen. This note was on the repair status from Olympus:

"Replaced lcdChecked all function and cleanedFirmware has been updated to the latest version as a result the Picture count has been reset to original factory setting of zero.Picture count will resume upon use. "

Anyone know what they mean by "Picture count"?
If "Picture count" means shutter count, then it appears that a repaired Pen could potentially  have it's shutter count reset to zero! Not a big problem really, but it would be something to consider when buying a used Pen.

I don't see why they would do that.

I don't know why they would do that either. I sent an email to Olympus asking about their repair policies.
I guess I got the new firmware v1.2, but don't see why that would reset anything. Will know more when I get the camera back next week.

Update on camera repair and "picture count".

I got my e-p3 back from Olympus after having the lcd screen replaced.. Here's the story:

1- My firmware was updated to v1.2.
2- The camera was reset to factory settings. Yep just like getting a new camera. Gotta go through the settings up all over again!
3- The shutter count was NOT affected.
4- The service note from Olympus that the "picture count has been reset to ...zero", refers to the file numbers that are used to sequentially number filenames ( even if you use a new memory card) when you use the Auto setting of the File Name option.

Now everything makes sense.

It actually makes sense to reset the shutter count if the shutter is replaced.
