'My Take On The New PEN Digitals'

Quick & dirty bolean logic based upon my experiences as an XZ-1 owner....

If the new digital PENS have incorporated the XZ-1 noise reduction routines (or something similar)...

Then shooting in RAW will be a necessity at ISO 400 (800 depending upon preference) or higher due to the NR smearing that occurs....(This is why I shoot in RAW with my XZ-1)

Again solely my opinion based upon my @rse.... :D

I've given up on shooting JPEG, can't live without ACR controls.

In the XZ-1, it can be defeated if you shoot in RAW  :)
However, those who shoot in JPG only will be disappointed at ISO 400/800 & above, too much automatic NR smearing....

DO YOU THINK I COULD SHOOT at iso2000 or so with the ep3 with  noise reduction off, or at a low setting?

must i shoot raw then??

There is no need to shoot in raw because of that. You just set the noise filter to LOW or even OFF if the default NR isn't to your liking.
On my E-P1 I have the noise filter permanently set to LOW, which I think is a good compromise between noise removal and detail retention.

And I have it to OFF, I can't live without fine detail.

You guys are way ahead of me. I can't even find it on my E-P1.

It's located on the utility menu (identified by the the two star-like gears)
Select "G" (Color/WB)
There are two settings
Noise Reduction: I have mine off
Noise Filter: I have mine on Low

Are those the right settings guys?

Yes, but you can safely set Noise Reduction to ON. It only affects long exposures (over a second or thereabouts).

Is that just for JPEG or RAW too (dark frame subtraction I'm assuming)?

I think it's for both, but I never shoot raw, so I haven't tested. It definitely takes a dark frame though.
