IMHO, those who resorted to personal insults towards Thom are "fanboys/fangirls"......Say one thing that's not positive & you face their wrath...

I stopped reading Thom's blog last time he denounced Olympus.  His page is extremely disorganized and cluttery.  There isn't much I can learn from his blog.  The fact that he likes to go on a rampage and denounce  Olympus just adds one more reason why I don't read his blog.  It almost seems like he has a personal vendetta against Olympus, like they hurt his feelings way back when.

I can't remember exactly what the original reviews of the E-P1 were.  Something like E-P1 is a gimmick that will never compete against a real DSLR.  OM failed, 4/3 failed, m43 will fail.  Buy Nikon because they give me free swag (a t-shirt at PMA).  Nothing about how innovative and revolutionary the design is.  It was just whine and complain that the AF is too slow.

Now we have the worlds fasted AF, and what does he do?  Whine and complain about how there is little differentiation between the models, and that the sensor is slightly tweaked.  Oh and by the way the AF has improved some.

Thom is like one of those kids at the basketball court who keeps talking trash, but then gets dunked on over and over again.  Unfortunately, the dude who runs 43rumors listens to his b.s and encourages him.  Almost as if to egg him on back to the basketball court just to watch him get dunked on again.

This guy has successfully addressed a few very important points in Oly's marketing. Even I do agree with him. And I am a huge fanboy myself....

What I find in the industry that I work in is that a company has X amount of dollars to spend.  Some percentage of X goes to R&D, the other goes to marketing.  I'm glad Olympus is spending most of X on R&D unlike the majority of companies in the world.

Granted, the U.S. marketing sucks, but I don't care.  I don't think Oly cares either.  When people start seeing Joe Pro Photog using an E-P3 at their kids soccer games, they will want one too.  I just want a superior camera for my needs.  And once again, Olympus has delivered.  Sure, there are a couple wizbang features I would still like to see, but overall the E-P3 or E-PL3 (not sure which one yet) is reason enough for me to upgrade.  I just hope I can have it in hand before end of August.

Unfortunately that does not boost sales. See how Nikon has been offering the same plastic humped camera for ~10 years, only with a different sensor, and is still no.1 in sales.
Aggressive marketing and vendor lock-in will boost sales.

He does admit that he is using the Pen himself, so he can't be totally againgst Olympus. He makes a living writing and selling books about usig Nikon Cameras, so it's naturally in his interest that as many as possible use Nikon cameras. But I think he is secretly disappointed in Nikon that they have missed the mirrorless bandwagon. That's why he shows some interest for m4/3.

Unfortunately that does not boost sales.

That's probably true.  But, why should I as a consumer care about a companies sales figures?  All I want is the best possible product for the money.  Whether or not it sells well is none of my concern.  It won't make my photos look any nicer because the camera sold well.  What happened to my Nikon?  Oh, it's in storage because I never use it.  Will I buy another Nikon in the future?  No, because I switched to m43 and am happy with it.  I'm probably one of thousands with the same story.

Difference here is that Olympus has earned new customers based on merit, which translates as these customers will not abandon Olympus when CaNikon jump on the mirrorless band wagon.  The E-P1 was huge differentiation over CaNikon and thousands jumped ship.  Ok, the AF was slow, the UI was hard to use, and I like to complain about long black outs when shooting continuous.  But, within 2 years those problems have been addressed.  That is what I call aggressive marketing.  They listened to their customers and fixed their complaints.  That is true differentiation.

We really don't know what marketing campaign they have in store for the future now that R&D is taken care of.  I can only imagine what it will be like for the Bestbuy store clerk to explain to someone how to use the latest CaNikon DSLR or how to use the latest E-P3 whatever.  It might go something like this.

Bestbuy clerk - "Press the screen here and it does this cool effect thing where you get a really neat looking picture."

Customer - "You mean like on my iPhone, I just press here and it does something cool?"

Bestbuy clerk - "Yes, and it is really fast too, plus you can upload to facebook".

Customer - "Neat, now show me the CaNikon"

Bestbuy clerk - "I don't know how to use that camera, it's for pros".

Hahhaha, that was cute!
Sure you don't need to be using the camera that sells the most, but you can't deny that Nikon users have a greater choice of lenses now. Pity they can't use them all on D3100/D5100.
Indeed the E-P1 was a revolutionary product, but Oly have been trying to achieve that in the past - the most recent example is the SLR that does not look like an SLR - E-300/E-330.
Consistence pays off eventually, I guess.
Now I am awaiting the built-in EVF PEN that does not look like an SLR.

Olympus should comp me a free E-P3 for all the marketing I do for them.  We all know they made the purple E-PM1 because I suggested they needed a purple camera.  Granted, we don't have a built in toaster yet... But, I'm sure the accessory port will allow for a toaster eventually.

The topic is about Thom's blog.  And yes I am a fanboy.  That's what happens when you make a superior product, you get fans.  It just upsets me that people like Thom denounce Olympus in what I perceive as an attempt to discredit the company to scare off potential future customers.  OMG, don't buy Olympus, sales are down, they are going of business, all of your lenses will become obsolete just like the OM series... blah blah blah.  He never said anything about Pentax, yet Pentax actually did go out of business.  Maybe he is trying to be the devil's advocate in an attempt to motivate Olympus to shape up, but to me he comes across as a Negative Nancy more than anything else.

Guess what?
I own 4 Olympus bodies - two of them are Micro Four Thirds. (I think this qualifies me to be a "fanboy" too  ;) ) But I am objective in the "big-picture" view  :)

- In fact, in another forum that is Sony based, I'm debating (not arguing ;) ) the advantages that MFT has over NEX systems :) (I own both so I *think* I'm qualified to say this ;) )

So who is "authorized" to make negative statements about Olympus?
At times, it seems like you risk facing the firing squad if you're not on the "authorized list".... ;)

im a card carrying olympus fanboy, ill talk what ever shit i want about them and often have  :)

we all know enough about olympus to write a book  I suspect ,lol
[ a suspense novel? a love story ? an unauthorized :o
 biography??lol

though i personally have been  sometimes short with oly concerning their dedication to m4\3 and the lens roadmap  the more i read about the ep3 the more i want one ... their saying it out details[resolves]  the g3 16 mp sensor1 and has better dynamic range at some review sites  ... to be fair they have come a long way... their havin trouble getting a new sensor for the line , that ;pretty clear , but their current sensor with the tweaking really seems to have legs,

their new lenses seem so cool i have forgiven olympus before ive even seen them!

the eps seems a really marvelous machine , i may preorder very soom if i dont hear anything about the gfx pro
really soon!

sometimes we talk shit...
but I   we love olympus so i guess that makes it ok ...nest pas? ;)

I think people just enjoy watching Thom eat his own words from the past.  His biggest complaint now is  “There’s surprisingly little differentiation in key features of the three cameras.”.   And they are using "confusing marketing" tactics because the Olympus USA web page lacks details.  I'm guessing the web page was updated by an intern who wanted to go home early for 4th of July break.

Fact is, Olympus has 38% of the mirrorless market share in Japan now, up from 29% last year.  And the E-PL2 is the third largest seller out of all DSLR cameras.  Not bad focused marketing in my opinion.  Establish a strong foundation in your home country, then expand out.  Especially in today's U.S. economy where most people can't even get a home loan or are worried about foreclosing.
