'Just Thinking...'
« on: February 06, 2011, 11:59:28 AM »
Since I'm highly fortunate to have just been able to purchase the E-PL2, I've come to realize just how unfortunate it is that Olympus didn't include compatibility for E-P1/P2 & E-PL1 owners for the upcoming Olympus conversion lenses for their new 14-42 (currently only with the E-PL2 & the Japan only E-PLs)...

I'm sure at minimum, the wide-angle conversion lens could sell even more if the compatibility was extended....

On a more positive note, the upcoming macro conversion lens will be compatible for M. Zuiko 14-150ED lens owners so they at least don't have to get a new body obtain one of the upcoming conversion lenses....

I guess they are not compatible due to the rotating front element of the first version. It is just too weak to carry a multi-element attachment, although it handles well single-element close-ups etc.
By the way, I am not gonna cry for either of the above - Oly used to make front attachments with multiple elements and they were of great quality. Now they have
FCON-P01   3 lenses/3 groups
MCON-P01  1 lenses/1 groups
WCON-P01  2 lenses/2 groups
Such attachments for Oly compacts used to have up to six elements:

So unless these are made of SLD or LD glass, image quality is not going to be equivalent.

The first lens doesn't have a bayonet design.

You'll get no debate from me on this...however...
It's of my opinion that Olympus has offered these conversion lenses to keep in step with the red  hot selling NEX series that already offers conversion lenses of similar type....

Indeed. These seem like products made in a rush, not true photography tools.

somebody kindly explain to me why a rotating front element would make these things not work.
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

So a third party threaded wide angle/fisheye converter should work fine then

The added weight acts like a flywheel and due to the additional inertia does not allow the front element to change directions as fast as the motor controls it. This may result in "Check status of a lens" messages or premature wear of the AF gear inside. My home made LED ring light acts in a similar way, although made of lightweight aluminum.

Having just received my E-PL2 today, I can assure you that on the new 14-42 lens, the front element does not rotate....
