pentax 110 slr lenses on the ep-1
« on: September 08, 2009, 01:15:11 AM »
recently i made 2 quick adapters for 2 pentax 110 slr lenses

a 24 2.8  and a 50 2.8, these were tiny slr lenses made for pentax auto 110 cameras

the system probably represents the smallest interchangeable lens camera system ever made

the 110 format size is by coincidence very,  very close in size to the sensor used in the m4\3 system
{learned this by reading the ken rockwell review!]

[ the 50 was considered a 100 mm equiv. and the 24 a 50 mm equiv.]

i did a casual comparison of the fov of the 24 with the kit at just below the 25mm mark and they are extremely close

24 x 1.92 = 46.08mm equiv.

do they work ? well i am astounded by the sharpness of these lenses at 2.8   in order to stop them down a disk with a hole must be put behiond the lens, i tried this and it works great , i practice i may get a neutral density filter that can bring it down to about f 8 or 11 light tramission equivelancy.
it seems f stops were in the pentax auto 110 body and this is why no lenses faster that 2,8 could be made for this system.
there seems to be no vignetting at all  , in fact the light seems to be quite  even edge to edge .

as for their size? well  the 24mm lens  is so tiny  that i can nestle  it inside a 16 oz water bottle cap   its size is almost exactly the same size  as  a plastic pepsi bottle cap!!   [diameter and height ]it is  insanely tiny!

the 50 2.8  is a bit bigger  its 1.5 " diameter and 1.125" long! about the diameter of a shot glass but half as high.

a $5.95 ep-1 body cap was drilled to accept  the base of the   pentax 110 lenses they need to sit a couple of mm foward
test focus and glue when in the perfect position

i will post pictures  taken with these lenses in ep-1 user pics section

that is just too surreal. ;) Did you use the same "adapter" for both lenses?

each has a dedicated "adapter" a $5.95 olympus bc-2  body cap with a hole drilled in the middle.the lenses are semi- permanently m4\3 mount until i use a little careful force or a little acetone   to snap them apart.

i intend to leave them modified but may reduce the diameter of the 24`s by using a filter ring in place of the rim of the bc-2. i also will make a recess for the locking pin

I'm still hoping for Pentax to make a digital 110 auto :)
I still have a 110 auto with lenses lying around some where.
These where the lenses available for the system:
- 18/2.8
- 24/2.8
- 50/2.8
- 18/2.8 Pan focus
- 70/2.8
- 20-40/2.8

I don't have any to sell, because i don't have them myself :D
But you can find them on eBay from time to time. but they are not cheap lenses. Because this camera/lenses is highly collectible.

I just  got one Pentax 110. It was brand new in the box. I was so ecstatic. It was never used. The strap, bag, seals were all in place. Warranty card, manual, everything. The flash had never been opened. They even had battery holders and the batteries had an expiration date of 1981 still in packaging.

I don't know if I should open it up and use it.  I was going to tear it up just to make a lens for the e-p1. I guess, I'll have to put mine away in the vault and try to get another used one. Great camera...

sounds too special to destroy, pick up a 24 2.8 and a bc-2 lens cap , its all you need

does your kit have the 18 , 24 and 50 lenses?

so you see how tiny the 24 2.8 is ?
its the size of a plastic screw-on pepsi  bottle cap
and the image circle is plenty big for the m4\3 format

im astounded by it

they were hand held and focused with the 10 x  mf assist  ,they were shot at  about iso 200[ i think] and with the fl -14 flash on ttl auto ,i believe the shutter speed was 1\80 or a little higher

You can make an adapter by cannibalizing a Pentax 110. I've seen a few. Here is one from Flickr.

_8080911 FLICKR

A Japanese website sells it. I think it was Yahoo auctions but I can't read japanese.

That way, you don't need to make custom adapters for each lens. Just screw and unscrew. This is what me started on it. But when I got my 110, I said , hell no. So I am hunting for 2 more right now. One to use w/ film and one to use with my E-P1.

What the size of these lenses really show isn the size potential for future micro four thirds mount lenses

the pentax 110 slr 24 2.8 lens is about the height and width of a bottle cap and weighs perhaps 1\2 an ounce!

imagine the 24 2.8 scaled up to provide a 1.8 or 1.4 maximum f stop? imagine a design like the pentax110 18 ,as well as the potential for something like 12 or 10 that would give a fov of 24 or 20 for m4\3,
nikon and many othe manufacters made such lenses for full frame and there seems no reason why scaled down designs with some tweaking could not provide similar fov equivs. for the m4\3  system

it seems to me that panny and oly have given us grossly oversized lenses , if these primes are a hint as to what  prime lenses can be designed to cover the  m 4\3 image circle
im beginnning to believe that the lens barrel sizes on micro 4\3 lenses thus supplied may be guided by marketing concerns over  consumer expectations [ as they imagine it !]  , rather than by the dictates of optics and their necessary housings from a purely "what is possible' paradigm.   for those who would claim that you need enormous barrels to contain ois or af motors, i would say that many tiny lenses have been made for the 100`s of point asnd shoot cameras that have ois and af and they  are plenty tiny and plenty good.

as was said by eric drexler the nano theoritician many years ago,  imagining just how small things COULD be made,

 "theres room at the bottom"

I am really determined now. My aunt-in-law was throwing out some stuff and had a box of 110 lens and filters. What a lucky find. I have the 18, 24, and the big honking 70mm pentax 110 lens.

I am thinking about doing this:

http://forum.getdpi.com/forum/showthread.php?p=133981

I have the Rj C mount adapter and I will look for a aperture/shutter ring. Incredible.

That's hella funny looking.  Now I feel like an idiot for buying into m43.  Digital Pentax 110 is the way to go.

a modified body cap take 15 minutes to make and another 10 or so to calibrate the distance to film plane and glue with a spot of crazy glue where the lens and cap meet , this is reversible, it s all you need to play with one of these lenses, you can take some great shots with these lenses there insanely tiny and have an image circle sufficent for the m4\3 sensor , i detect no light falloff and no vingetting at all!!!

cost for bc-2 body cap ? $4.99 at b & h

no way that contraption is worth that money!!!! the voightlander m4\3 to leica m mount is nicely made and very good but at 149 dollars i think its too costly too , after all there is no glass in it
, i bought it anyway the voigtlander is very useful

the bodycap lens mount is just fun , try it and see

I emailed him to lower his prices and got a positive reply back. I don't think is a big demand for those.

There are some fringe m4/3 users like ourselves who have these lens. I can probably count less than 8 people from the various boards. I would buy one just for the convenience.

let see if he will sell them to me at my asking price (i'll tell ya if it is a done deal - around 3 jacksons /hint).
he said he will try.

it never hurts to ask. I suggest you ask him too. More people who tells him his price is too high, he might lower it.
