« on: April 20, 2011, 05:11:38 PM »
Hi guys

I am planning to guy a nice 50mm lens for my EP1

What do you guys think about this Olympus OM Zuiko Auto-S 50mm f/1.4
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/Olympus-OM-Zuiko-Auto-S-50mm-f-1-4-EXC-/130509812180?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item1e62fdb1d4

is it worth buying?
will this be ideal for every day use , portraits  etc etc

and am i able to use this straight on with my ep1 or do i have to buy an adaptor?

or do you guys have other lens you would recommend for normal every day use and portraits.
i currently have a 14-44mm standard lens

If you like the FOV of 100mm as a normal lens and for portrait use, then the 50mm is a good choice.
But, I suspect that you will carry the 14-42 and the 50mm as a 2 lens kit... Which is a nice kit. I have a 50mm f/1.5 as my portrait lens and a 14-42 ED I just bought as a walk about lens when I want more versatility than the Panny 20m.

You will need an OM > m43 adapter to use it. And you will need to use Manual Focusing also, but you can use "A" mode for sami-auto exposure.

As far as price, I have no idea what a good price is a OM 50mm f/1.4 in excellent condition.
I believe that lens has very good reputation as does the OM 50mm f/1.8.

I have the 50/1.8 and love using it!

Just got the 55/1.2 and really happy with it so far, although I've only had it for 1 day now.

The reason I did not buy the 50/1.4 is from the information I gathered online, from users on Flickr and dpreview, they said the 50/1.8 was a sharper lens + way more affordable than the 50/1.4.

Also, the rumored new Olympus (or is it panny?) lens is suppose to be 1.4 as well!  So I felt there was no need to get one if a newer prime lens would be coming out.

I have exactly the lens you are looking at, and I am very satisfied. I had it on my old OM1, and got an adapter from Cirrus, which seems to be of very decent build quality. When I bought the EP1 I bought a 20mm 1.7 panasonic lens, which is great, and very light, but is not that great for portraits. The 1.4 Zuiko is best used at a max of f2 I have found, but still that's pretty good.

Best of luck,

EP 1 with Pany 20mm 1.7, Zuiko OM 50mm 1.4, Zuiko OM 135mm 3.5, Cirrus adapter

True. When I got my OMZ 50/1.8 at a swap meeting, the guy had both 50/1.4 and 50/1.8, and the 50/1.8 was waaaay sharper. Given the price difference, it was an easy decision to make.

Moving it to "Non-Native (Adapted) Lenses" as this is what it is.
