Contax G Mount Adapter
« on: November 11, 2009, 11:53:11 AM »
I've ordered mine from "RJ camera accessory store" (see also http://e-p1.net/index.php?topic=718.0) last week.

Wistfully waiting for it in order to use my 2.0/45mm and 2.8/90mm Contax G lenses with the E-P1! The 2.8/28mm won't fit (neither the 2.8/21mm nor the 8/16mm) since the rear lens extend too far into the camera body as far as I understood.

It would be awesome if someone built an adapter that allowed auto-focus to work with the G lenses.  I would also settle if it showed the focal distance scale in the LCD, but since the EP-1 doesn't have any sort of focus scale for their digital lenses, that's probably a moot point.

This item is brand new! And very unique too (not seen any similar adapter anywhere). It's available under the following link: http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksid=p3907.m38.l1313&_nkw=Contax+G+to+G1+GH1+GF1+Olympus+E-P1+mFT+m43+adapter&_sacat=See-All-Categories

The Contax G lenses are AF lenses only without having a manual focus ring since the Contax G1/G2 had the option to set focus manually via the camera body. The solution here is a small wheel which drives the AF screw of the lens. The 1:1 gear transmission ratio allows accurate (but not very fast) focusing.

I use my thumb for manual focusing.

Un-mounting the lens requires to have the lens release button pressed close to the adapter.

Ep-1 looks like perfection with the Zeiss Planar T

Again with the Planar 45mm f/2.0 - I really love the E-P1 and the 45mm!

Just saw another Contax G mount adapter at ebay, seller is called "lens-workshop". The adapter features a "real" focusing ring which probably has much faster manual focusing capabilities. Haven't tried this adapter but it is an interesting alternative (but more expensive than the adapter I use).

I bought a new adapter having a much faster focus ring (around the lens) finally

Haven't used it yet (just received it yesterday) but here my first impressions:
  • not as solid as my old adapter
  • quite big (diameter), looks not as nice as the old one
  • focus ring is somehow "crunching" (the gear)
  • it's much faster to focus (needs a bit more than a quarter revolution for the full focus range)

I am sorry for the dumb question, but why do you need a focusing ring on the adapter? Is this lens unable to focus on its own?

yes indeed it used a shaft pin connector like 1st gen nikon af lenses the gear turns the shaft pin to focus the lens which otherwise has apparently normal old fashioon gearing to focus the lens

How do you like it?

I have been thinking of getting one, and the ones with 360* focus ring range from $40 to $130 (Megabones)..

Good, I was also looking at the under $50.00 ones...
You feel it is sturdy enough for the G 45mm f/2 (the only lens I have for my Contax G1 at the moment).

seriously thinking about one of these adapters too
one for the 90 ...... keep the existing one for the 45

back when i first got the adapter i didnt like the amount of turns necessary for the full focus rangeso i made a modification to an oly eveready case  put a tripod screw on the bottomand a gear to mesh with the adapter to speed up focusing

heres the pic again
