Black and White ohotos - regular & different kind of toning
« on: January 16, 2012, 12:35:21 AM »
Quite often 'b+w' photos has an added toning to it.  I would like other members here share their thoughts, ideas and photos on this matter.  I'll start off myself with what I 'term' a 'creamtone' b+w photo, - this one a kind of 'street shot', - even if its not from a street, - rather from the waste areas that customers can move around, inside a modern shopping mall.  In other words: As public as any street.  Here we go:

Leica D-Lux5 @ 7.5mm [28mm] - 1/30 - f2.3 - ISO200

Any camera/lens is OK in this thread.

Here are a few I did for a HS Senior few years back. (Aug 26, 2006)
Canon D60 (2nd DSLR from Canon with a 6mp sensor), It was not the current one  :D, I believe the Canon 20D was current
I used a Sigma 70-300 APO Zoom.

Sepia Toning can really make a so so BW photo into a great Sepia Photo
Starbucks had campaign of posters in the early 2000's with a more brown tone sepia in my area.

I like the color one also.
I think the colores one can get better(more special) with some lightrooming.

I am a monochrome type of person.  I work for a monochromatic company, and for monochromatic people.  My surroundings at work are monochromatic, and I usually 'see' monochrome.  That being said, I prefer the cold tones of black and white, but I will dable in tones...all for the sake of the picture.

I like the purity of black & white, the simplicity and the honesty...

And perhaps 'digital' b&w still cannot match film for tonal coverage, I still find digital b&w photos to excel in telling the story...

Jason, I totally get what you are saying. Sepia can add a different mood, and provide an old time look. Many still do like it as an option..
Here is a BW of the my 1st photo

And I totally agree with you.  There is no "right or wrong" way, there is only the way of the photographer's eye.  I've just included a sampling of what I see.  And yes, the sepia added a warmth familiarity, a hominess if you will, to you student photograph.

right now Im on a gold filter binge, which is nothing more than a white balance shift and yellow saturation, but Im love with the final result. Weird thing is, the sephia tone bothers me... you gotta look at them to see the difference but once you see it its quite obvious. Click em

Heres prior to my filter obsession

So then they're not technically black and white? Three shades instead of two?

Sepia is a TONE over the whole photo. With, Digital, though, even shooting RAW in B&W gives you a Color image file. So, it is matter of applying a preset or adj your color sliders to a Sepia (Brownish) tone.

funny thing is, sepia toning wasnt done to obtain a particular look at first, it was done for archival purposes. Chemicals were used to convert the metallic silver in the print to a sulfide compound, which is much more resistant to the effects of environmental pollutants, but resulted in the warmish brownish tones

Thank you, ladies & gents for you posts/responses to this thread, - and for your great photos ,as well!

To add a few more examples, I'll pick a few from my Leica D-Lux album, - all from the 'summer of 2008', - all from the 'fjords&mountains of western Norway'.

I've also takes the liberty to add a video (from 'YouTube'), a quick 'drive-through' of Våtedalen ('Wet Valley') in the Norwegian Fjordland.  This valley has the main road 'north-south', and is very prone to snow avalanches during the winter months, - something that you may notice from the quite many 'land fills', built as a road protection for avalanching snow masses at the roadside to the drivers right.  And if you wonder, the mountain heights here are 1000-1500 meter (3500-5000 feet) above sea level. The general advise to drivers here, are: Keep a good, safe distance to the car in front of you.  In case of avalanches, chances are that 'next car' might be able to assist you, - or vice versa.  Do not drive without a shovel! (Click on the pics!).
