I like photography, but wasn't sure I would be good at it/could learn it/would want to continue it, so I bought a decent quality yet relatively cheap camera.
Turns out I love to take pictures, and I am slowly learning. So it was a good buy for more than just being the cheap choice for a starter camera.

Can I assume that you got a highly discounted E-PL1 as your relatively cheap starter camera? If so, you ought to be very happy--many have raved how the E-PL1's JPEGs are among the best in the industry. Hope you learn lots from this forum. Happy shooting!

i love olympus - my first digital camera was the E520. i've upgraded a few times, but was in a car accident a few months ago and my right arm/neck shoulder are no longer happy with carrying extra weight around.  i recently sold my gear and most of my 4/3rd lenses and preordered an olympus EP3 because i wanted to stay with olympus, the PEN will be much easier to carry around, tho' more expensive. i think the trade off will be worth it.

now i'm just waiting for my PEN to arrive.

Welcome to the forum! Bummer about your accident, but I think you'll be very happy toting around your m4/3 gear. It's great to be able to "blend in with the masses" yet still have a high powered system at your fingertips.

I'd outgrown my Lumix point -n- shoot and DH didn't like sharing his Canon SLR (he's waiting for the 5D markIII to come out before he upgrades then I'll inherit the 40D) so I got a GF2.

thanks for the welcome.  good news for me: B&H shipped out my EP3 last night. i should have it today, unfortunately, the 45mm lens has not shipped, so i will be using the 14-42 this weekend.  well tonight actually.  can't wait!!!  i think i will be very happy with its size and weight.

The 14-42 will surprise you with its usefulness--of the two, I'm willing to bet that it'll be your most often used lens (that is, until you buy the Panasonic 20mm, in which case it'll stay glued to your camera 90% of the time  :)). The 45mm is great for portraits and its speed can produce the lovely bokeh we all want, but it's still a tad long to be useful as a general purpose lens.

oh yeah, no doubt i will use the 14-42 way more than the 45. i like the 45 for specific work where i must have the blurred out background.  i also want the 14-150 as well as a walk around.  later i will get the 9-18.  i did receive my camera and so far, i'm very happy with it.  only played with it for a few minutes, will have to wait until later.

I have both the 9-18 and 14-150, plus the 20mm. And you know what? The 14-150 has turned out to be my least used lens! I thought this superzoom would be a good "walkaround" lens to handle everything, but it makes the camera much bigger (esp. with lens hood attached). The 20mm is surprisingly good for walkarounds, and the 9-18 is my second most often used lens.

really?  you don't use the 14-150 much.  initially was going to get the 40-150 lens because it's less expensive. when i had the FT40-150 i didn't use that lens much, i prefer normal to wide or prime lenses, but wanted one lens for the far away, all purpose or going to the zoo shots.  i might have to see how much bigger the 14-150 will make the PEN. i definitely don't want much bigger and would be fine with the 40-150 - just didn't want to get too much into changing lens.   anywho, thanks for your feedback.  i have money for the 40-150 and not for the 14-150 just yet.

For me it was a question of compactness & portability, versatility of being able to change lenses compared to a point and shoot, quality of images and the balance between all of these factors. It was serendipity which allowed me to buy a new white E-P1 with kit zoom from Amazon marketplace cheaper than an E-PL2 on offer locally. The E-P2 had just come out but was so expensive new, the E-P1 was discontinued and not available at all, so it seemed like a bargain. The E-PL2 felt better in the hand, but I love my E-P1. I also got a panasonic 20mm which stays on the camera 95% of the time. I recently got a 40-150mm which is useful for landscapes and urban wildlife but I find the 20mm is so good that I use that for street photography, low light situations, candid portraits and close up.

I'm a complete amateur, learning as I go. Loving every minute, thanks to the E-P1.

My first digital DSLR was also the Olympus E-520, which I still have and use frequently with both a 25mm fixed and the 18-180mm - both great lenses.  My first experience with Olympus goes back almost 30 years when I bought an Om2N and an XA.  Both are amazing film cameras.  I paid about $350 for my first Om2N - I recently paid $49 for a used second one.  Both function still perfectly!

So for me it was both a love of Olympus cameras and an interest in a new design that was very cool looking (the E-P1) and has the feel of a Leica range finder camera.

My only dissapointment with the digital Olympus cameras is the slow auto focus in low light.  I am considering getting a E-PM1 to see if it is faster.

Yes, I actually surprised myself--I had lusted for a "superzoom" for a long time and thought the 14-150 would be perfect. It's still a nice lens mind you--good range and fast, silent focussing. But it does spoil the compactness of my E-P1--it's fairly long, and since it's so long, I feel I have to protect the front element with the lens hood ('cause it's easy to bonk it against things). And this makes the lens even longer. So now I put it on only when I know I'll need the range. Otherwise, I still use my kit zoom for when I want the compactness, plus it gives an extra 1/3 stop speed at the wide end. You may want to spend your money on the Panasonic 20mm first--it's somewhat pricey, but well worth it. Everyone raves about it and it'll be on your camera 90% of the time.

I absolutely adore the 40-150mm. It's a wonderful lens.

Before I start, I've always had a passion for photography, but never had a good camera till I got the E-P1 and messed with A and M modes off the bat (hate auto.)

I went to a party at a friends restaurant, and saw he had the E-P1, I was amazed by how cool it looked for some reason, even though I have had vintage cameras back in the 80's and 90's, but I was thoroughly amazed when I found it was digital! Previously, I was going to buy the D90, but my wife suggested I get the E-P1 instead because it "looked cooler and was smaller."

After on, I read a lot up on M43 and the D90...

And now, here I am, happily with my E-P1, with battle scars and all!

Everyone thinks my E-P1 looks so cool, and it's easy for them to use when they don't have experience with professional cameras.

For a small, interchangeable lens platform.  A really poor man's Leica...
