What do you use for black and white conversions?
« on: March 14, 2010, 12:29:10 AM »
I've noticed a lot of great photos in the gallery lately that have some great conversions and I would love to know how you do it.

I use Niksoft SilverFX Pro. Nothing else that I've tried comes close to it. I can make my EP-1 shots look almost exactly like the results from my old rangefinders if I want.

I use Adobe Camera Raw. I may also open an image in Photoshop and cut and paste a color channel to convert to B&W--that would be like shooting with strong red, green, or blue filters.

I’m impressed with the built-in black and white treatment of the E-P1, including the “virtual” coloured filtration, such as red, orange, yellow, etc.

The other camera I consider to have very good black and white rendering internally is actually my phone — a NosyEricsson W800i. Surprisingly superb in black and white.

Not still a photo in gallery 'cause my pen will arrive tomorrow. I use adobe lightroom, sometimes using presets.

I tried SilverFx the other day.  It's better than stock photoshop tools.  I like Niksoft's use of control points.  You can probably do some really cool stuff with it, like red filter on one part of the image and green filter on the other easily.

Gimp also has black and white conversion filters that you can download for free.  It includes all of the common filters (red, green, yellow, orange) plus some other combo filters. http://registry.gimp.org/node/111

I always find my Lightroom conversions to have a lack of contrast in the photos.
