Question: What do you do with your photos after you take them?
« on: October 18, 2011, 08:12:33 AM »
Just wondering - out of curiousity - what people here do with their photos after you take/make them?

Do you upload to a website/social networkinging for viewing?

Do you sell them?

Store on hard drive?

Give them away as gifts?

Do you print them?

Store them in a portfolio?

I think I do a little of all of the above, but I'm always looking to sell something.

I let them ferment on my hard drive until I become unlazy enough to post process.

naturally I store them somewhere, I eventually find an old hard drive when where I then get suprised at what I did in 2004.

But every so often I compile about a hundred digital pics and upload them to Walgreens website and have them printed out. Then I put them in a photo album, just like the old days, so folks can look at them. One thing is for sure, everybody I know seems to LOVE looking through a photo/scrap book on the couch with a mere 50 photographs, rather than gawk at 20,000 digital photos online. I keep a couple of photo albums just to take on vacations to visit family to keep them up to date. Sharing them with an iPad isn't even good enough, photo albums rule in the real world.

i'm trying to get a little better at naming them, separating the jpgs from the raw (keeping the same name of course) and making sure they are tagged.  it's a lot of work.

i do  try to stay on top of deleting the ones i will never print or sell.

i would like to have more printed though.

i think i recently read somewhere one person backs up two copies to CD, of all his pics, stores them in a vault and does something else with them and i'm thinking wow. i keep them on my hard drive and my HD is backed up online just in case someone steals my PC.

The ones I don't burn in my rituals I put on my backup hard drive.

this is also a nice thing to do as well. truthfully, i forgot all about photo albums. i'm so used to online albums.  i had some photos of mine printed as a book for the coffee table, but wow, photo albums seem ancient.  i stopped buying them and put my print photos in a box that i've been meaning to have scanned to a CD.

First, they get uploaded as soon as practical.  I will then go through them several times to weed out the throwaways.  I then process the top batch first, and then possibly the second tier images.  I work in a calibrated environment.

If the pictures are from a family event, I upload full-size srgb files to flickr, keeping them private.  Guest Pass emails are then sent out to all the familial suspects, and they can download what they want.  Furthermore, I have trained the family on how to use online printing resources to get the best possible reproduction...worked so far.

My personal-use photography usually gets uploaded to flickr as well, private of course.  When I share online it'll be a web sized link.

The only images I really leave open in public at flickr are some of my cat pictures, and test images.

Every month I back up my database, then I go through it and purge what I thought I was going to use but did not.

And I print when necessary.

I tend to upload them all to flickr, process the ones I think are worth the extra time and keep a RAW file for.

Have started to try and sell a few online on Photobox and also have some of the more commercial type shots on Photodune if they get accepted.

Most of mine (say 60%) end up in the mac os trash. From the remaining about 80% get to be processed with lightroom and from those about half end up going to iphoto. The best are to be seen in the iphone and over the internet. Because I'm taking about 500 photos per week, I´m starting to get picky about those I like (very few).
