If Canon had pioneered Micro Four Thirds...
« on: September 22, 2010, 06:07:07 PM »
Would the prices be lower?

Something to think about.

But there’d certainly be a Nikon mirrorless right now.

I would say "probably". But it depends on the other assumptions made around the whole market. Bottom line is I think Canon could drive the sales volumes up much faster than Olympus and Panasonic combined, which will help drive price down faster too.
Cameras big and small: Sony HX9V, Olympus E-P1, Canon 300D (IR mod), 7D and many others!

Strange but I did not watch such a thing happen in the DSLR market. We would be buying DSLR kits for $100 if that was to be true.

That's simply unrealistic. m4/3 prices should be lower, but that doesn't mean they'll drop down to nothing. Look at it this way, m4/3 is simply overpriced compared to DSLRs for what you get. We're paying more for less. The size premium doesn't quite cut it. Sony at least are doing better from the start, and I think it likely CaNikon will do so too when they eventually join in.

At the wide angle and prime, m43 is over priced.  Primes/pancakes are especially overpriced.  You get pretty good savings with telephoto if you include Zuiko 4/3 lenses.  I can't believe the Panny 20mm f1.7 is still $350 considering a Canon 50mm F1.8 is $100, I guess the extra $150 is justified for pancake form factor.

If Canon had pioneered m4/3, I think there would be much wider adoption by now, given Canon's marketing might. This in turn may have resulted in lower prices, but only slightly. Don't forget, Canon optics run at a premium and unless they were giving up APS-C simultaneously (highly unlikely), they wouldn't want to cannibalize their lucrative APS-C business.
