Could Four Thirds And Micro Four Thirds Eventually Merge?
« on: June 10, 2010, 07:42:49 PM »
After reading this recent blog post it began to dawn on me, could Olympus and Panasonic be considering not abandoning the Four Thirds system, but instead merging it into the Micro Four Thirds System. This is the quote from the article that made me begin to think about this whole thing:

Because even though olympus is working on a new sensor format with newer , sharper , brighter lenses that wouldnt be possible with lessons learned with 4/3’s….
your old 4/3 lenses are going to STILL be sticking around for a long time
Because now… you can switch out the full lense mount with the sensor. Which means that you can still use your old 4/3 lenses on BRAND NEW CAMERAS that will also be able to take the BRAND NEW SENSORS AND LENSES (if you choose to upgrade that is)!
(this is also good news for micro4/3 lovers aswell)

Although the translation on the post is fairly open to interpretation, when reading it that is the instant thought that came into my mind. Would it be possible for them to create a new sensor that allows Four Thirds Lenses to be used without an adapter on Micro Four Thirds?  Or an adjustment to the mount that would allow this to happen? I know that because of the size differences I'm probably wrong, but that article just made me think about what they are up to with this whole thing.

What are your thoughts on the blog post?

An optical system inside the camera body can adjust the flange-back distance and also provide the newer , sharper , brighter lenses by decreasing image size from legacy lenses.
Sure Oly will not stand still while other companies are increasing their camera sales, but what exactly is it going to be - nobody can say!
