Will the mirrorless camera replace the DSLR?
« on: February 15, 2012, 04:40:42 PM »
This is something that film camera owners probably asked themselves back in the year 2000.

Do you think that mirrorless cameras will become more capable and thus relieve any need to buy a DSLR instead? Or do you think that people will continue to buy the DSLR because there really isn't enough of a crossover for mirrorless cameras to take their market share?

Here's an interesting set of statistics from CIPA which really shows that at this point it could go either way:

I don't think so, not yet anyway. N/C/P no longer offer a new film SLR, so, Digital SLRs has replaced film SLRs. Leica also has discontinued the R9, but has a Mirror-less Digital body in the works that will accept "R" lenses. although, those where not AF., and it will be via an adapter anyway.

I think the "entry level" DSLR will eventually become extinct. People are already noticing that they can get similar image quality from pocket sized cameras, and this will keep spreading. Non-photographers want small and easy-to-use cameras.
But I think there will always be a market for high end DSLRs.

Nah, you're wrong. Some people will always want to look intimidatingly professional with their big black humps and lenses and such.

Might want to add a sarcasm font to that.

adorable indeed.
But its bound to happen, the limits of mirrorless systems are being brought down reeeeally fast, and sony is gonna release a full frame nex in less than two years, hold me accountable, Im sure itll happen . The transition will be way faster than film to digital, just you see. And in case someone feels like arguing, film is gone, it is, no buts. Its easier to get a gram of coke than the roll of film you want these days...
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

I still can't see sports shooting being preferred with mirrorless over a DSLR.

Why not? If the features of the Nikon V1 was built into a more pro-oriented package, I could totally see it becoming a phenomenal sports camera. Smaller sensor = shorter tele lenses. Could make life much easier for sports shooters.

This may sound weird, but I'm slowly getting back into film more, but I am DEFINITELY getting the EM-5!

When electronic shutters become standard, sports shooters will fully switch to mirrorless.  The GH2 does 60fps at 4MP.  Imagine shooting 60fps at 20MP with flash sync!  DSLR will never be able to accomplish that.  Many sports shooters who can afford it use PhaseOne because the leaf shutter lenses that allow super fast flash sync.  Electronic shutter can potentially surpass even leaf shutter speeds.  This is yet another reason why I'm not thinking about getting an E-M5.  It still uses a mechanical shutter.

There's no way to avoid the shutter blackout though, which makes it impossible for sports.

So what happens when a manufacturer puts a large full frame sensor in a professional mirrorless body?
It won't be a small camera but it will be mirrorless.... 8)

There are mirrorless systems longer than there are reflex systems, so why will they go away. The first camera's where mirrorless.

It's not even noticeable though. I can shoot the Blue Angels flying over with my K-x and see where they're going. With the E-P1 I just guess.

The OM-D does not have shutter black out!  Now I kind of want one.

Quote
If you drop the continuous shooting speed to a still-pretty-rapid 4.2fps the camera will attempt to track focus during shooting, and maintains a live view feed between frames in the process: the first Olympus Micro Four Thirds camera to do so. In principle this should help track your subject when panning.
