Question about Image Size / quality / storage size
« on: October 14, 2010, 09:46:49 AM »
I am new to this forum and have a question.  I just purchased an Olympus ep-l1 and love it so far.  I do have a question about image size.  I have my camera setting at LF and my Jpeg images are about half the storage size of my Canon G9 or my wife's Sony s6000.  I'm having a hard time understanding the difference.

1)  Olympus EP-L1 -  4032 x 3024,  314 dpi,  2.12 MB

2) Canon G9 -   4000 X 3000, 180 dpi,   4.74 MB

3) Sony S6000 -   4320 X 3240, 300 dpi   4.77 MB

Can someone explain to me in layman terms why my OLY images are smaller in storage size?
Thanks,
Dennis

Hello, Dennis, and welcome to the forum!
You have obviously chosen a higher compression mode for your E-PL1 images. You can shoot like this and accept some degradation in image quality, or choose a better quality mode and receive larger files. The largest JPEG that E-P1 has generated on me was about 10MB, I think.

Different compression ratios in the camera firmware.  You cannot really know how much they are compressing their images.  If you want to compare, do so with the raw sizes.

Sometimes RAW files are compressed too, the average file on the PEN was around 10 megabytes, but on my Pentax K-x its closer to 15 megabytes.

I've seen RAW files from E-P1 differ in size, I guess that there is some lossless compression applied.

There is a lower compression called "Super Fine" for the Olympus Cameras. You need to go into the menu system and assign it to one of your size/compression settings.
Be nice to each other, life is too short for anything else.
