Popup flash usability
« on: August 15, 2009, 12:21:10 AM »
Even though people wanted a popup flash on the E-P1, I think we all knew that one wouldn't be very usefull. The flash on the GF-1 probably won't be either, considering how low it pops up and how low the power output is probably going to be. Do you think they should have left it out of the camera instead of making a low quality one?

One thing, I'm sure that the pop-up would be blocked or cast a shadow with many lenses, even a lens the size of the Oly 14-42 zoom. It will probably only be useful with the pancake lenses and then for subjects at least a certain distance away. The pop up on my Canon DSLR, which is quite tall, casts a shadow with the kit lens if you get too close for example.

Panasonic (and anyone else into photography) knows that built in pop up flashes are strictly an emergency situation tool, further proven by the presence of a flash hot shoe.

BUT, for some reason the e-p1 gets crucified for not having one. I'd say Panasonic put one on to have one thing less for reviews to whinge about. They don't seem too worried about looks and keeping the smallest possible form factor either (i don't thinks gf1 is ugly, just boring/plain looking).

Just my 5c ;)
