OLYMPUS .ORF FILE EDIT AND SAVE BACK TO .ORF?
« on: April 22, 2011, 11:36:20 AM »
Hello,

I am trying to edit a photo in some way and transfer it back to my camera so that the camera treats the file as the original .ORF.

Anyone know how i may do this?

Thanks

Yeah, there is a way. First off, you need the Camera Raw plugin for Photoshop and Windows (or Mac,) also, you might want to use Lightroom most specifically, because Photoshop doesn't export in original format (.ORF.)

You can edit your photo in Lightroom, right, then when you export it, you choose "original" format (.ORF.) Also, if you want to edit the .ORF file, you right click on your image while in Develop mode, and choose "Edit In..." and choose your software, then you can do it like that.

If you want to view thumbnails of .ORF files in Windows, search google for "FastPictureViewerWICCodecPack.msi."

That's odd, the ORF is supposed to be the raw data from the sensor without anything, even without demosaicing applied.

Theyre even accepted in court as evidence, wouldnt this defeat that?? I thought it was not possible
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...

No. Raw .ORF files edited in Camera RAW (or Lightroom) doesn't save the changes in the .ORF file but externally in an associated .XMP file. The same applies to any other RAW editor. The associated files may not show when viewing folders as they may be treated as 'hidden' files. The reason for using an associated file is that you can revert to the original RAW file at any time even if you don't have the facility to do so in the RAW editor by simply deleting the associated file.

Only .DNG files which is what the linked article is referring to allow for saving changes internally within the 'raw' file. The .DNG file needs to be created as a file conversion which can be done automatically when transferring the files using Camera RAW or Lightroom. You also have the option of saving the original RAW file in the .DNG file but this creates files approximately twice the size. Olympus cameras cannot read .DNG files.

As to the OP's question, copying edited .ORF files back to the camera is highly unlikely to succeed. If you can view the files in-camera, you certainly wouldn't be able to view the changes as the camera simply wouldn't recongnise the external file. I think when you do internal editing in camera, the camera creates a separate JPEG file which is what you see.
Be nice to each other, life is too short for anything else.

Yeah, I have seen this done by Bibble too. It saves a small file with the same name, but with a different extension. The small file contains the parameters adjusted (WB, exposure, etc.) while the .ORF is unchanged.

Exactly. If you don't generate a separate jpg, it won't let you edit the file.
