Magnify to help focus legacy lenses
« on: April 12, 2011, 05:59:12 AM »
I've got a nice set of legacy lenses with m4/3rds adapters that I use with a Lumix DMC-G1. I'm interested in the EP-2 or perhaps an EP-1 for in-camera stabilization and fairly good low noise on higher ISO. One nice feature on the G1 is magnification to help manual focus. It's a little awkward but works well on the G1 and I've come to depend on it to get some sharp photos.
Does the EP-1 or EP2 have a feature that allows you to magnify the image in preview to assist manual focus? Is it easy to use?

Hi, Carl,
E-P1 and E-P2 do have this feature.
No, it is not easy to use.
In an optimal situation you will have to:
Press INFO in order to get to the magnified view;
Press OK in order to magnify the center;
Focus;
Press OK again in order to un-magnify;
Compose;
Take a picture.
If you wish to change a setting, like ISO, WB, etc, it is not possible when you're in the magnified view, no matter if the center is magnified or not.
You will have to press INFO in order to get to the default screen of the LiveView and then change your settings.
By default E-P1 has several modes of LiveView, you will get mad scrolling through all of them each time. You can however disable the others, thus each press of the INFO will switch between magnified view and default screen.
I hope this helps.

Carl,

It isn't as bad as Adash makes it sound. It takes much longer to read through the steps he describes than it does to focus the lens. I have the E-P1.

But I will say if you are getting a Pen primarily to use legacy lenses, you might do better with an E-P2 and the mountable electronic viewfinder.

@ traveler_101:  You wrote: "It isn't as bad as Adash makes it sound".
What Adash 'made it sound' (you mean 'wrote', I guess), then, according to your written statement, logically, needs to be untrue, or, at least not correct.  Right, traveler_101?
Which I believe to be utterly untrue.  What Adash wrote is absolutely correct and per ce.

Thanks all, I guess each system is awkward in its own way. Glad to hear it works and by disabling some functions you can get it to work, at least, a little better!
