G1 Manual Focus "Touch Up" on AF Lens
« on: September 22, 2010, 06:22:01 AM »
Hi Folks,
I just picked up a gray market new G1 body for an excellent good price to use as a back up for my E-P2,  (Yup, I've bought gray market before and know the potential issues.)  I put my Lumix 20/1.7 on it for a test and everything works extremely well.  But. . . I have a question.  When I touch the focus ring to fine tune the focus after doing an AF it goes into magnification but when I let go of the focus ring, unlike the E-P2, it doesn't go back to the full image, it stay magnified.
What am I doing wrong?  Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.

O.K., here's what happened;
1. I push the shutter down half way to get the auto focus.
2. I turn the focus ring to "fine tune" the focus while still holding down the shutter half way.  The image magnifier is now on. This is how I do it with the E-P2.
3. I stop touching the focus ring but unlike the E-P2 the magnification doesn't stop.  If I let up on the shutter button I loose my AF.
Strange.  I'm used to the Pen.  The G1 really has some nice features but the fine tuning the focus issue is a bit bothersome.
cosinaphile, thanks for the suggestion.

Maybe you have to reassign the AF function to some other button and have half-press of the shutter do nothing more than AEL. Is this possible on G1?

Could this have to do with the Gray Market status of your camera?

Doubtful, I think.  It has the full Euro warranty, just not for the US.  I've seen this before.  A bit risky, but often some great prices.  These sorts of deals are available through Amazon marketplace sellers and eBay.  As long as you understand what's going on, you are usually fine.
When I switch the focus to MF on the knob located to the left, (photographers point of view),  of the VF 'hump" it works fine - touch the focus ring and it magnifies, focus, hit the shutter half way and you're back to the full frame.  It's just the AF/MF combination function that's weird.  When I figure it out, I'll be sure to post.  Thanks for the comments.

*UPDATE* - Just tried it again.  It does eventually go back to full frame from magnification in AF/MF mode, it just takes a lot longer than when in straight MF.

I was just about to write that, the pannys take longer to get back to the image but theres a trick to override this. It's a bit tricky but it works:
after you do the AF+MF quickly press the shutter as if your gonna take the picture but dont keep it pressed (in other words, a quick full press), the tricky part is you gotta leave the shutter half pressed (like for autofocus). It'll go back to unmagnified instantly but wont take the picture even though you just pressed the shutter fully.
That's two glitches I've found, should I put this in tutorial voyager?
More megapixels don't necessarily mean more resolution...
