Fixing the VF-2
« on: August 05, 2011, 05:56:32 AM »
Guys,

I know that it was discussed somewhere already, but I am really frustrated about this and would like to know how you fixed this for yourself.

The VF-2 has a very loose connection with the Pen (E-P2 in my case, however should be the same for any Pen) when attached. This is a known problem.

What is the best way to fix this? I read about tape, but is that really working fine? In the rare occasion that a flash is necessary, would the fixed VF-2 be easily removable again?

I am really concerned about simply losing it somewhere in the crowds, or it falling down when I unpack the camera as it almost always gets loose in the bag.

This is the main reason which keeps me from buying the faster E-P3 - that it still has the need for the bulky, external, and loose VF-2.

Thanks,
Z.

I've read a few people who use one of those cords from a lens cap - the ones that your meant to tie to your camera to prevent losing it to make sure that if the VF2 falls off it doesn't fall far, sounds like the VF3 has a better mechanism for holding it on.

I use the VF2 on my EP3 and honestly it holds very tight, you have to really try or force it if you wish to remove it, it doesn't get loose at all.

Sounds like either your hot shoe is bent in some way or not properly manufactured, or your VF2 has the same issue.

i have heard about this problem too... in some cases their is a tight certain fit , but in others is is loose and unsecure
i would take a piece of sturdy tape or a sheet of good qualirty card stock or paper of good quality and atach it to the bottom of the device so that when inserted it requires a bit of effort to attach, alturnately you can examine the fit of the device on another  pen to see it the problem is duplicated and examine for differences and solution

For every n2hhr out there who is blithely satisfied with the VF-2 (apparently out of good fortune), there is someone else who has had problems. Sometimes it leads to disaster. I remember this right from the beginning of the release of the E-P2. Not more than two weeks after deliveries started there some guy was telling a story of how he lost and could not find his VF-2; and there were many other near misses. The most drastic solution I can recall reading was a guy who used super glue to paste the damned thing on permanently.

I use ocular clip on viewfinders on both my E-P1 and Bessa RF film camera. I have had some problems with one of them on the E-P1 and have had to take remedial measures (stick a small piece of toilet paper under the viewfinder). But what hell, the viewfinder came with the RF lens; others I have bought relatively inexpensively. I don't pay $249.99 for a viewfinder that can fall off. No wonder the VF-3 has a locking mechanism.

I never noticed a fit problem on my VF2 so I got it out to double check.  Fits just right, not loose at all on my E-PL1.

Since there are no connectors on the hotshoe portion of the VF2 I'd just slip some thin card stock or thin plastic in there to shim the fit in the hotshoe.  Or, a hobby shop would sell very thin clear plastic that could be glued to the bottom of the VF2 shoe to tighten up the tolerances.
