E-P1: Prices rocketing?
« on: July 08, 2011, 12:07:37 AM »
Hi all,

As I have both, the E-P1 and the E-P2, I thought about selling the E-P1, probably together with the 14-42mm kit lense. I remember that I was a bit frustrated, as I bought it for roughly 500 EUR at a local shop (Munich, Germany) around Christmas 2010, and only a few months later it went down to 300 EUR or even lower.

I just checked the prices for a new E-P1 it kit lense, and it seems they went extremely up recently. From 300 EUR in April to now again nearly 500 EUR! What happened? Even if the E-P3 was a disappointment somehow, there would still be the E-P2 as a cheaper alternative than the E-P3, and compared to the E-P1 with the option of using the VF-2.

This is the situation in Germany at least; how about other countries? Ist the demand for E-P1 going up again?

Thomas

The E-P1 is becomming  a collectors item. Especially the white one  8) Which I happen to have .... :)

This would be a cool scenario... but I believe it has to do with supply and demand.
Stocks are low and that their still is a high demand.
or maybe ....

I've noticed in the UK that there are not a lot of the "cheap" EP1 deals left, certainly not from the more visible retailers, I paid £300 for the Silver EP1, 17mm and VF1 which I think is a bargain, but looking on the comparison sites the prices are more now, I guess this is down to the other stores having sold off their stock and perhaps the dearer ones not being in too much rush to clear their stock.

The cheap ones are the EPL1s, I just got one, as a backup body for a project this summer, and it just cost me 150 brand new here in the UK.

I too bought my E-P1 and 17mm kit for just over £300.00 a few months ago and feel it was a good deal, especially considering the cost of any prime m4/3 lens. As good as the E-P1 is I'm surprised, being 2 generations old now that the value hasn't dropped dramatically. Although a couple of months ago SRS (in the UK) were selling a the white E-P1 body for £199.00.

I've been looking online at various E-P1 sales, and they're very cheap used unfortunately.

Well, if it is on the way to becoming collectable--if that is the perception--then there will be greater demand. I have always thought it will become collectable, as the single most influential camera that led the mirrorless  charge and have consequently strived to keep mine in good condition. I don't have a white one, though.  :D

I got my E-P1 with the 20mm 1.7, plus flash for £400. Was very pleased with the deal, and particularly since the lens is now quite difficult to find, and rightfully so because it is so good.

I wish I could find a white one. I hated the color scheme when it was released, but now I like it. Especially with the black kit lens.

From the same place? I can't imagine how there would be such a large price difference.

Jonecshri--what a bad break: damned thieving. Someone broke into my car 20 years ago while my wife and I were visiting the Cloisters museum in New York and stole my much beloved Canon AE-1. Unlike you I didn't have the good sense to replace it.

M-5 you seem to have a pretty good nose for value then. What do your instincts tell you about the E-P1?

Wow, the price sure is going up! A used kit of E-P1 w/17mm lens and VF-1 viewfinder is running about $500 on Amazon Warehouse Deals right now. A brand-new kit from retailers selling on Amazon is about $800 for the same setup. Compare that to a few months ago when they were running about $450-500 new direct from Amazon.

Yeah, that is interesting. There must be sufficient demand to charge these prices which is somewhat surprising so early in the game. I mean a few years pass, and I see people looking back fondly on he E-P1 and with the coming success of the m43 standard, recognizing just how significant this camera is. It will be collectable. I am surprised that this seems to have begun so soon. The E-P2 by contrast will sink into oblivion very quickly.

Interesting information. I'm now looking for a second E-P1, since having used mine, my son is insisting on having the same unit (although I think I'll buy it with the zoom kit lens rather than the wonderful 20mm 1.7 Pany I have on mine). I think I shall have to buy him as well a second Zuiko OM standard 3.5 135mm which he really uses mine a lot.

Even the proposal to buy him the new (and very good) Olympus XZ1 fell on deaf ears !!!

The EP 1 is just such a good camera (obviously the relatively poor screen would be more interesting in OLED, but that is of concern only under very bright sunshine, which anyway is never the best situation to take photographs)...

I had a brand new E-P1 (used a couple of times, only 600 shots) for sale in ebay for 250 Pounds for a whole month and nobody bought it. Has as nearly as 15 followers and couldn't sell it.

Now I decided to keep it because is to nice camera not to own one...
