You can buy a Canon L lens for $900. I don't get why the HD badge would matter as much as it seems to.

I don't know either, but here is my guess.
The Panasonic lens is incredible fast in CONTRAST (not phase) autofocus, so the motor has really horsepower. But besides being fast, it's also very quite, so some new technology might be at work and the new technology is expensive. Anyway, I hate zooms and I do just a little bit of video shooting of my kids with a (Panasonic :-) ultracompact camera, so I don't care :-)

This lens is a 10x "superzoom". If you compare the price of Canon and Nikon's 18-200 zooms, the price is similar. The 14-140 is built for continous video AutoFocus and exposure adjustmens, so the motors are completely slient. The aperture adjustments are continous, rather than full stops for usual lenses.
